Anderson Elementary Newsletter
December 2019
From the Principal
Sarah J. Anderson Family,
I have always bragged to my colleagues about the community of Sarah J. Anderson. Our parents, staff, students and community partners are supportive, involved and incredibly kind. I am so thankful for each and every one of you. Our school was hit with an unspeakable tragedy days before Thanksgiving. We lost Tiffany Hill, a member of our family. Over the years, Tiffany has donated hundreds of hours to our school. She shared her time, her talent and her love of education with us all. She will be missed.
I am so thankful for the community support that has wrapped around our staff and students in the wake of this tragedy. Thank you for your gifts of food, volunteer time, kind words and support. Thank you for helping bring a sense of safety and security back to our campus.
We are all very thankful for you.
Katie Arkoosh
Principal

Keep The Flu Away!
Being that flu season is upon us, here are a few reminders of things we can all do to help prevent the spread of disease.
- Wash your hands: wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Cover your cough: cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands.
- Talk with your health care provider about getting the flu shot for yourself and family.
The health of our children is very important to all of us. One of the most important things you can do to stop the spread of germs is keep children at home if they're sick. Children should stay home from school at least 24 hours after their fever has passed (without the use of fever-reducing medicine). Be sure to follow up with your health care provider right away for any fever with an associated rash.
Make a plan - Plan for childcare at home if your child gets sick or their school is dismissed. If you have children with asthma or other medical conditions that put them at higher risk for the flu, talk to your health care provider and the school about a plan to protect them during the flu season.
Kindergarten Registration 2020-2021
Vancouver Public Schools is beginning their kindergarten registration on January 13th for any child who will be five (5) years old on or before August 31, 2020. To register for kindergarten, bring proof of residency (lease or current utility bill), birth certificate and records of immunization to your neighborhood school. We recommend parents register their children by May 1st to ensure that your child receive an invitation to attend Kindergarten Visitation in May.
Calls to School
Office hours are 8 am – 4 pm. Calls are not sent to teacher’s rooms during instructional time, 8:30 am – 2:50 pm, but you can leave a voicemail. Or feel free to email the teacher to communicate.
Go Home Changes
Go Home Plan changes are not accepted by phone. All changes to go home plans MUST be in in writing (email Anderson@vansd.org or note to the office) by 1:00 pm on Mondays and 2:00 pm Tuesday-Friday. Please do not only communicate with the teacher as there may be a sub, a FAB teacher or questions from the office or our transportation department and information can get lost.
