"I shall work and pull at it as long as God gives me life."
~ Fr. Augustus Tolton
Greetings Everyone,
I hope your first week of classes went well and that you are each enjoying your Labor Day weekend. Labor day became a federal holiday in 1894, to recognize and honor the achievements, contributions and sacrifices of American workers. It is a day we acknowledge and give thanks for the labor of all those whose work has contributed to our society, campus and life.
This month, the United States remembered the 400th anniversary of the first slave ship entering the port of Jamestown, VA in 1619 carrying over 300 human beings who were to be robbed of their dignity and sold as property or "chattel". This grave injustice began the American struggle around race, prejudice and discrimination that continues 400 years later. To call our and the world's attention to this ominous anniversary, this past June Pope Francis recognized Father John Augustus Tolton making him “venerable”, paving the way for him to become the first African-American saint.
Venerable John Augustus Tolton was born into slavery in Missouri in 1854. He escaped slavery as a child, fleeing across the Mississippi River one night in a row boat with his mother and two siblings as Confederate soldiers shot at them from the shore. No American seminary would accept Tolton because of his race, so he studied for the priesthood in Rome. When Father Tolton returned to the U.S. after his ordination in 1889, he faced racism and discrimination both in the church and in society.
To learn more, please read the full biography of Fr. Tolton. As Catholics, we look to the saints as sources of inspiration; they are everyday, ordinary individuals who overcame extraordinary challenges and injustices. Fr. Tolton inspires us today to acknowledge and actively work for equity and justice. We pray for the intercession of Fr. Tolton; my he inspire us to actively work to eradicate the sins of racism, discrimination and hate from our hearts, campus, country and world. May his life and labor inspire each of us to persevere and never lose hope!
Pax et Bonum,
~ Jamie

Born three days apart, with ancestry coming through the same portal of history, Richmond, VA, Reggie Harris and Greg Greenway are on a pilgrimage together, one that began three decades ago. The racial divisions that are the reality of America positioned them in two different worlds, but the amazing bonds of music, respect, admiration, and shared vision have brought them together as friends and colleagues. The musical and spiritual blooming of this history has become Deeper than the Skin, the telling of their stories through words and music. It is a quintessentially American story: The gift they have to give is how to face struggle with hope, and even joy.
