3. Narrative

b. Provide clear and concise details
c. Introduce narrator and/or characters with effective techniques
d. Use dialogue and description to demonstrate the story and how characters respond
e. Use transitional phrases to help progress events
f. Include a conclusion that follows narrative
g. Combine the use of simple, compound, and complex sentences throughout
5TH GRADE
1. Opinion
a. Use support and references for information that explains own opinion
b. Organize paper to flow logically and coherently
c. Link opinion to supporting points using supporting words
d. Clearly state the topic
e. Introduction includes outline, relevant points, and information
f. Conclusion statement is related to the opinion
g. Maintain constant flow throughout paper with use of transition words
h. Includes ““propositional phrases, appositives, dependent and independent clauses, transitions or conjunctions to connect ideas correctly,” while also using appropriate verb usage (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2014)
2. Informative
a. Examine topic while conveying ideas and information sources clearly and accurately
b. Introduce topic with related information grouped logically
c. Include “formatting, illustrations, and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension” (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2014)
d. Provide conclusion of topic with generalization of observations and focus
e. Use various sources to gather information
f. Use topic specific vocabulary and write using their own words

3. Narrative
a. Write fiction or non-fiction with series of events that unfold
b. Establish a situation and narrator and/or character
c. Provide descriptive details use appropriate technique, such as dialogue, pacing, tone, descriptions, and events to show the responses of their characters in the given situation
d. Conclusion with relevant series of events
e. Include transitional words and phrases
f. Provide sensory details and use correct grammar rules
