Social Studies
We are starting a unit on Exploration. We will be doing a project based learning project that will exam the achievements and failures of many explorers from the 11th-20th century. The kids will design a presentation that incorporates creativity, critical thinking, colloboration, and communication. I want to thank you for outstanding Veteran's Day Projects. They were very informative and inspirational. I am also proud to announce that over 90% of our students scored an A on their states and state capitals test!
Literacy
Cinderella stories will be coming home in Tuesday folders this week. Students are to do their final draft at home. I prefer it be typed, one page, double spaced, 12 font in Times New Roman, but 10 font is okay if the story is really long. Handwritten neatly is okay if a computer is not available (single spaced). They are due Dec. 2nd. Students may make corrections if needed according to the rubric I used to score their drafts. Parents may help type if student gets tired. I prefer student sits next to their parent if the parent types. We are discussing the difference between mood and tone. We have a bulletin board in the hall with pictures that show mood. Mood is how we feel when we look at the picture/text. We are in need of more pictures under these mood categories: pictures that make us feel soothed, optimistic, powerful, calm, mysterious, depressed, or dismal. I’m giving two aviator wings for each picture brought in (magazine/newspaper). We are beginning our Norman Rockwell unit this week. It is one of my favorites. I introduced a non-fiction reading strategy called SQ3R: Survey, question, read, recite, review. Our writing will be opinion/argument writing for this unit. Students are not required to do their reading log over the holiday break next week. They will have their logs from this week with them, so if they do read they may log it. This log is labeled Nov. 18-Dec. 1, but only require the usual 100 minutes for this week, not next week.
Science
Students are working on a Light and Energy Unit. We want to thank you for a successful round of trips to ONSC. The kids did a fantastic job despite the weather. We would like to thank our parent chaperones!
Math
Students are continuing to work on adding and subtracting fractions.
