Stop Ivory SMORE

Why this matters

Stop Ivory is a non-profit organization dedicated to stopping elephant pouching. They and they´re partners are fighting legal pouching in countries with elephants and the illegal trade of ivory.

If we allow our Elephants to be killed, not only will we betray our heritage, but we will impoverish ourselves and future generations.~ Ato Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia.

Statistics of Elephant Pouching

Cites estimated that in 2013 more than 20,000 African elephants were killed for their ivory tusks. Last year the numbers were virtually the same. More than 60% of carcasses surveyed across the continent in 2014 died at the hands of poachers. According to Cites, anything more than 50% sends elephant numbers into decline.

As many as 40% of Asia’s 50,000 elephants are thought to live in captivity today. In 1990 India had an estimated 17,000 to 22,000 wild elephants with at least another 2,200 living in captivity (10-13%) throughout 11 of India’s 25 states (now 29).

The Crisis

Every 15 seconds an elephant is killed for its ivory. This needs to stop. Stop Ivory and its partners strive to: close domestic ivory markets, implement national elephant action plans, and end the sky rocket of illegal ivory markets.
