Greetings,

The start of a New Year is a great time to reflect and set goals for the year ahead. For me personally, I am really focusing on an attitude of gratitude and looking for the positive in all situations. As I reflect on all I am grateful for, I certainly am grateful to work with such a kind and dedicated community of staff and families. I look forward to seeing and working with your students everyday, and am excited for the months ahead.

This month, our school wide focus will be on recess. Our staff will be working with students on being safe, responsible and respectful while interacting with peers on the playground. As a reminder, our playground area is not supervised in the morning, and students should not play on the playground equipment, soccer or basketball courts prior to the start of school. Students should line up and wait for staff.

I have some good news to share about our EA hiring. We are excited to welcome two new EA staff members to our community. Brittany started this week and a second EA will be starting next week. We still have one more position open, and would appreciate you sharing information about this posting with anyone who may be interested. These positions will be used to support student safety and to support staff in facilitating academic interventions in reading and math.

The FIT Assessment - Invitation to Participate

Our school will soon participate in a district-wide opportunity for reflection called the Fidelity of Implementation Tool (FIT) Assessment. The FIT is a tool that measures the extent to which a school implements many of the systems and practices that have been identified as critical to equitable and inclusive schools that ensure high levels of learning for all students.

During the FIT, two support staff from the district will spend the day with us, talking to a variety of people in the school community to get an understanding of our practices. Family and community members are invited to participate in a conversation with the district staff in order to respond to predetermined questions that are asked as part of the assessment. We will use the data we collect from this process to inform our School Continuous Improvement Plan and other work at the building level. The district will look at district-wide data to highlight areas for further intentional support.

Dear Bridger Families,

This is an update regarding transportation and childcare for both English Scholars staying attending Bridger Creative Science for the 2023-24 school year and Dual Language Immersion (DLI) students moving to Lent for the 2023-24 school year. District staff wanted to make sure you had updated information and answers to questions that Bridger families have posed.

Transportation:

We will provide transitional transportation for DLI students living within the current (2022-23) Bridger boundary. Many DLI students living outside of the boundary will also receive transportation but will only be eligible under the DLI transportation guidelines: Transportation provided by request for Heritage Speakers, non-heritage DLI students outside of the attendance boundary may request to ride from an existing stop as long as there is capacity on the bus for additional students.

Extended Learning/Afterschool:

The District is looking to increase childcare and after-school enrichment opportunities for students and schools impacted by the Southeast enrollment and program balancing. We recognize many of you have asked for before and after school care. District Staff has been meeting with providers in order to expand childcare opportunities for 2023-24.

We sent out surveys on December 5th, 2022 to the Bridger, CSS and Lent communities. Based on current survey responses, approximately 162 families have requested childcare.

The numbers break down thus:

• 67 families are requesting childcare at Bridger

• 47 families are requesting childcare at Lent

• 48 families are requesting childcare at Marysville

Please note that the survey officially closed on Wednesday, December 14, 2022. We plan to make provision for late entries.

We are currently working with partners to plan for student and family interests and needs. In January, we will hold open houses where partners can share information about their childcare programs with families. The current plan is to hold this meeting by the 3rd week in January, so families can get their questions answered and make decisions on next steps.

Hello, Parents and Community of Bridger School, my name is Charlie McNeely, and I'm the Restorative Justice Specialist for elementary schools for the Portland Public School District. I have been in this position at Bridger since the beginning of the school year and it has been such a pleasure in getting to know the students and staff. I just wanted to quickly introduce myself and share what RJ is and attach a couple of links which can be found below on how it came to be an initiative for PPS. Restorative Justice is a philosophy grounded in the belief that positive, healthy relationships help us thrive. When we do things that impact others and create harm to those relationships, it is our individual and collective responsibility to make things right. Restorative Practices are the skills and processes that help us build, maintain, and repair relationships to form healthy, supportive & inclusive communities. I am one aspect of implementing this framework as my specific focus has been on building relationships and community within the school and working towards ALL students feeling welcomed and included. We are now building upon those skills and teaching the students problem solving tools and how to respond in a healthy and solution-focused way to conflict.
