Principally Speaking
Jackson Parents/Guardians,
Wow! This year sure has flown by! Students have really learned a lot this year. Thank you for your constant support of their education.
CMAS Testing- April 8-26, 2019
It’s that time of year again when our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders take the Colorado State Assessment called CMAS. Students have been talking regularly about GRIT, Perseverance, showing integrity, etc. The students are ready to show what they know and reach the goals they have set for themselves.
This year, we are happy to be able to have our students take only one test a day to help alleviate any possible stress for our students by having them take two tests in one day. The only way this would change is if there is a snow storm that forces our overall schedule to change OR if a child is absent or tardy to a testing session. This means that they will need to take a make-up test, thus providing the students the opportunity to take two tests in one day, taking them away from their regular classroom activities. So, please ensure that your child is on time everyday to school and keep appointments to afterschool. (See the section in the newsletter with CMAS specific dates.)
Parent/Guardian Volunteers
Thank you to our PTO members. These wonderful parents/guardians and staff members have been instrumental in planning for our Trunk or Treat, all of our fundraisers that paid for field trips, student and staff incentives, technology in the classroom, etc. They have run our Health Screening, helped in classrooms, supported our library, read with students, and so much more.
A tremendous “Thank you!” to our truly amazing parents/guardians and staff members for all of your hard work and dedication to Jackson Elementary. I would personally like to thank: Corey & Katie Rivera, Brandon & Melinda Cobb, Brian & Cassandra Guimond, Chris & Heather Haynes, Mychael Smith & Rhonda Wolf, Gwen DeMuth, Deliliah Chavez, Carolyn Black, Patrick Gilliand, Bev Henry, Shelby Williams, Lynn Noble, Jean McKenna, Jackie Robbie, Lou Ann Johnson, Ashley Gardner, Abbi Noll, Lola Lauricello, Cheri Schroeder, Bernice Motzer, Debbie Hankins, Hadel Asajre, Ashley Castleberry, David & Mykia Smith, Jason & Amanda Motzer, Kate Essick, Adrienne Cooper, Wendy Swearingen, Jenny Hodur for their continued effort. This school is a much better place having you be a part of it!

CMAS TESTING
Attention 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade families!
CMAS state testing will begin April 8th and continue through April 26th. In an effort to complete all required testing in a short amount of time, test sessions are scheduled for morning and afternoon. While attending school every day is always important, it is particularly crucial during the testing window that your child is at school every day and on time. Also, please try to avoid scheduling appointments during this time. Otherwise, students will have to be separated from their classmates until they have completed the testing sessions. Students who are absent will have to makeup tests at other times which causes them to miss out on instruction.
Help your student be successful! Please be sure that your student gets a restful night’s sleep and plenty of opportunities for physical activity. We appreciate your support in completing these assessments!

Field Day will be on Friday, May 3rd from 8:00am to 11:05am. Many students look forward to this day all year! The purpose of Field Day is for students to play and compete, but mostly have fun! Students are encouraged to wear sunscreen, dress in layers, wear a hat, bring a water bottle, etc.
Students have practiced very hard in Physical Education this year to develop their skills, and now it’s time to show off a little! Parents/guardians are encouraged to attend, model positive sportsmanship, and cheer on all of our Jaguar competitors. This day is a whole lot better when the “fans” show up! You may also join your child for a special luau lunch that day, during their normal lunch time.
Speaking of cheering, the Annual Staff vs. 5th Grade Kickball game will begin at 1:00pm. Feel free to stay and cheer on the students and staff!
Attention: Parents of Graduating 5th Graders!!
The Tdap immunization is required before 6th grade!
ALL INCOMING 6TH GRADERS NEED A TDAP IMMUNIZATION. This shot is in addition to the shots required when your child was in elementary school.
Tdap protects your child from getting or infecting others with whooping cough (babies are the most vulnerable). It also protects against tetanus and diphtheria.
State law requires that all 6th graders have this immunization along with those required for elementary school. The complete requirements are:
• 3 to 5 DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis)
• 1 Tdap
• 3 or 4 Polio
• 3 Hepatitis B
• 2 MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
• 2 Varicella (or documented history of chickenpox)
Parents often have concerns or want more information on children’s immunizations and vaccine safety. A resource developed for parents with frequently asked questions about the safety and importance of vaccines can be located at: www.ImmunizeForGood.com.
Please make an appointment to get this done as soon as possible. Bring proof of the immunization to the school office before the start of school in August. Students that are not immunized may be excluded from school.
Where can you get your child immunized?
Your family doctor or pediatrician.
El Paso County Health Department Immunization Clinic:
1675 W. Garden of the Gods Rd., Suite 2044 Colorado Springs, CO 80907 (719) 578-3199 phone for an appointment. Appointments are necessary. Bring shot record with child. Straight Medicaid is accepted. Cash, checks, VISA/MasterCard are accepted, fees based upon insurance. No child will be turned away. Walk-in Clinic on Tuesdays only 8:00 am – 2:00 pm. Must bring shot record.
Peak Vista Community Health Center: 2838 International Circle, 632-5700. (You must be registered with Peak Vista to be seen there. If your child qualifies, they will assist you with registration).
Immunization requirements will be strictly enforced for all students. Students, who do not meet the requirements above, may be excluded from school, according to the Colorado School Immunization law. Parents must submit a completed or in process Certificate of Immunization* by the first day of school.
Parents may sign yearly exemption forms based on religious, medical or a personal reasons. In the event of a VPD (vaccine preventable disease) outbreak, students with exemptions may be subject to quarantine and exclusion from school for weeks, in which case D-11 is not obligated to provide tutoring.
Medical exemptions must be signed by a physician and need only be completed once.
