PD Day Jan 30, 2019

Thank you for your engagement and commitment to professional learning and growth at our PD day on Wednesday! Thank you for your attendance and participation. Way to go Team EV!

I had the privilege of attending an inspiring seminar on equity led by Dr. Curtis Acosta and Dr. Orlando Carreon. The title of the session was Culturally Responsive, Sustaining & Humanizing Education. Dr. Curtis Acosta was a high school teacher for nearly 20 years in Tucson, where he developed and taught Chican@/Latin@ Literature classes for the renowned Mexican American Studies program in the Tucson Unified School District. The state of Arizona banned ethnic studies in 2010. Eventually, the school district had to stop offering Mexican American Studies or lose $15 million in annual state aid. Teachers, parents, and students filed a legal challenge to the law and lost the case. They appealed that ruling, and three years after the ban, in July 2013, a federal court ordered TUSD to reinstate high school Mexican American Studies and add African American studies. The courses are now known as "culturally relevant" classes.

Dr. Acosta will return on February 15th to continue the seminar he began with us on Wednesday. I can't wait for day 2 of the seminar on February 15th! The clip below is from a documentary film that came out in 2012 called Precious Knowledge based on the work of Dr. Acosta and his colleagues in Arizona. Some of you may have seen this documentary when it came out.

About the Film (2012)

Precious Knowledge interweaves the stories of students in the Mexican American Studies Program at Tucson High School. While 48 percent of Mexican American students currently drop out of high school, Tucson High’s Mexican American Studies Program has become a national model of educational success, with 100 percent of enrolled students graduating from high school and 85 percent going on to attend college. The filmmakers spent an entire year in the classroom filming this innovative social-justice curriculum, documenting the transformative impact on students who become engaged, informed, and active in their communities.

Seeing our Students for their Talents and Gifts

The work of Tara Yosso is about viewing students wealth and capital from a community cultural lens. Our students have many gifts and talents that do not always visible in our current structure of measurement.

Yosso argues that all forms of capital can be used to empower individuals. Yosso designed this model to capture the talents, strengths and experiences that students of color bring with them to their college environment.

The Cultural Wealth Modelrepresents a framework to understand how students of color access and experience college from a strengths-based perspective. Below we summarize Yosso’s definition of each form of capital and pose questions to consider in determining how a program, school, college, or other institution can promote each specific type of capital.
