Art Monthly
December Lowell Art Studio Updates
A Note from Ms. Chroneos
Dear families,
I have loved spending time with and getting to know your young artists this fall. Your children are making connections with each other and growing in their confidence through art and creativity. It has been a wonderful first year at Lowell so far and I am ending 2022 so grateful for each of your students!
I am wishing you a wonderful winter break and holiday season.
Warmly,
Ms. Chroneos
What's Happening In...
K artists have practiced painting procedures and skills this past month in a variety of ways, including primary & secondary color line projects, shape collage/paintings, and most recently some ROY G BIV (rainbow order) paintings. Students have enjoyed a variety of media through each of these projects creating wonderful process-based works of art.
First Grade:
Grade 1 artists have studied shape this month, creating shape cartoons, "flying" self-portraits, and city drawings with geometric shapes. Students recently listened to the artist Faith Ringgold's book Tar Beach, about a girl who dreams she can fly, and are currently making their own mixed media flying pictures.
Second Grade:
Grade 2 artists have reviewed warm and cool colors and have practiced creating Zentangle patterns this month. Now, students are in the midst of creating styrofoam relief prints of their patterns and warm/cool designs.
Third Grade:
Grade 3 artists embarked on a big project this month with several different steps - Zentangle stars with complementary color backgrounds. Some classes even had the chance to make the stars "pop-up" - so they are three-dimensional. Through this project, students developed different patterns and their understanding of how different colors on the color wheel work with one another in art.
Fourth Grade:
Grade 4 artists have reviewed warm and cool colors and have practiced creating Zentangle patterns this month. Now, students are in the midst of creating styrofoam relief prints of their patterns and warm/cool designs. This is a very similar project as grade 2, reviewing essential concepts.
Fifth Grade:
Grade 5 artists have studied color-mixing with watercolor this month, with an in depth review of the color wheel. Students created analogous color tape paintings and are now developing "organic" or nature-inspired designs to layer on them. Students studied close-up photographs of plants and animals in order to identify the organic shapes and lines that exist in nature.
