Virtual Club Compass

What is it?

Virtual Club is ... Social Emotional Learning

What is my commitment as a volunteer?

1hr 15min/week

  • Pre-lesson Q & A with your Club Coordinator
  • 10-minute conversation/relationship-building with students
  • 30-minute lesson presentation
  • Post-lesson debrief with your Club Coordinator

What would I do?

We use EduMotion, a movement-based SEL curriculum, to engage students in five areas:

  1. Self-awareness
  2. Self-management
  3. Responsible Decision-making
  4. Relationship Skills
  5. Social Awareness

Small group leaders present the video-based curriculum and facilitate conversation.

Small group helpers support the leader and participate in the interactive lessons.

When would I volunteer?

Tuesdays, 3:45pm-5pm

How do we conduct virtual club?

We use a password protected Zoom invitation for volunteers and students. We will train you how to use the basic features of Zoom and how to engage with students in a safe, virtual environment.

What kind of support will I have?

We have a Club coordinator for each club section who is in charge of organization, logistics and problem solving before, during and after each Zoom session.

We ensure there are two volunteers for every small group of District 186 students (Gr. K-5). You will always have a teammate with you.

We offer remote asynchronous and synchronous training in how to use Zoom and EduMotion, as well as Club Compass orientation.

Virtual Club is ... Book Club

Club Compass Coordinators, volunteers and local celebrities read aloud stories to students. Student receive the book in advance and read along. It's a fun time for ALL!

What is my commitment as a volunteer?

40 minutes/week

  1. Students listen and follow along via Zoom as you read aloud.
  2. You will need to read with fluency and feeling, bringing the story alive.
  3. You will periodically ask questions or bring out important elements while engaging the kids with the book.
  4. Books are chosen in advance and all students receive a copy.

When would I volunteer?

Thursdays, 6:55-7:35pm

Virtual Club is ... Enrichment
