Athey Notes
Week 11
Welcome to Week 11!
Dear Athey Community,
We had a great start to our second quarter last week! Students are getting involved in clubs, everything from coding to origami to horticulture! Our librarians have begun Connect 4 Tournaments at lunch to help entertain students during these rainy recesses. Our PTSA is bringing back the famous Garage Sale and the School Store. We have a team of teachers working on the our new and improved Turkey Trot Fundraiser - Build a Future and Leaving a Legacy - complete with a challenge run, escape rooms and more! And we are beginning an Athey All Stars Student Recognition program to help acknowledge all the wonderful community builder qualities we are seeing in our students. Want to know more? Then check out the rest of Athey Notes!
As our temperatures are dropping and precipitation is increasing now is a good time to make sure you are signed up to get notifications in case of inclement weather, buses on snow routes, delays or cancellations. You can sign up for Flash Alerts to stay up to date!
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Joel Sebastian

Athey All Stars! Student Recognition
Athey All-Stars
One of our goals at Athey Creek Middle School this school year is to increase the ways that we recognize students for their awesomeness. We are in the process of creating several ways to do this, the first of which we are calling Athey All-Stars. Athey All-Stars will focus on recognizing students who embody or show significant growth with a specific character trait each quarter. All staff members will select one student to recognize each quarter by sending a personalized note home to the student and their family as well as having a group photo taken of all students who are recognized.
For Quarter 1, the character trait for which we are recognizing students is being a Great Starter. Examples of students who staff selected as Great Starters include students who bring a positive and inclusive spirit to class with them each day, students who start off each day or class period with energy and enthusiasm, and/or students who may have started off the school year really well.
Last week, staff wrote a personalized note to the student they are recognizing. Those notes are now in the mail so please be on the lookout to see if your student was recognized for being a Great Starter.
The character trait for Quarter 2 is Unifier. Students who create a sense of unity among Athey students, staff, and community will be recognized at the end of the quarter.
Turkey Trot ACMS Fundraiser
Building a Future and Leaving a Legacy
Attention Athey Creek Family and Friends!
Our ACMS Turkey Trot has been on a relaxing hibernation through COVID, but it’s back this year and better than ever! Our school motto this year is “Building a Future, Leaving a Legacy” as we transition to our new building, and we want to leave a legacy of excellence in academics and school spirit! But we need your financial help!
Next week, November 14th-18th, students will be collecting donations to support all of our amazing activities here at Athey. Your money will go directly towards field trips, after-school clubs, Unified Club, as well as supporting our new Leadership Class, which designs spirit assemblies, dress-up days, class competitions, and so much more. The students have so many amazing ideas, but we need your help to make it a reality.
During that week students will be able to participate in a coin challenge competition to see which teachers will have a starring role in the assembly on Friday. The students will bring in coins or bills and will choose teachers that they’d like to see in a pie eating contest by dropping money into their tube. The teacher from each grade level with the most donations will enjoy some much deserved pie. Also on Friday, students will be participating in an Advisory Challenge Run, and TWO different Great Turkey Escape Rooms that will result in a Golden Turkey Trophy for the winning advisory in each grade level.
We are so excited for the Turkey Trot and thank you for your financial support as we “Building a Future and Leaving a Legacy” this year at Athey Creek Middle School.

Our Librarians are the best!
Last week they had 26 kids get a public library card by a visiting Librarian from West Linn Public Library and a 6th grade told Ms. Yoshiwara, “I’ve always wanted my own library card and I was going to ask my parents to get one, but then I knew she was coming, and now I have my very own!” It was the cutest! Librarians making dreams come true! Thank you Shannon and Teri!

West Linn-Wilsonville COVID-19 Reminders
WLWV continues to support the health and safety of our students and staff. All students and staff members are expected to monitor for signs and symptoms of illness. As we move through this pandemic, community support has grown and access to COVID-19 tests are more readily available in the community. A school may send a student home with an at-home test in certain situations, but onsite testing is not available.
If you are seeking more regular testing, Oregon Health Authority does support a staff screening program (linked here). Students and staff are required to isolate at home in the event they test positive for COVID-19 or if they are exhibiting 2 or more COVID-19 symptoms. Please use this screening tool to determine whether or not you or your student should come to school.

Grading: Revision & Retake Opportunities
With the end of the quarter approaching, we know there are a lot of conversations occurring about students retaking or revising summatives assessments to demonstrate their current learning. Each quarter, all teaching staff at Athey Creek dedicate two class periods for students to revise or retake summative assessments. When these days occur does vary from teacher to teacher but the two days will occur for each class throughout the quarter. If your student is needing to retake or revise a summative assessment, please check-in with them to see if one of those days will occur for that particular class this week or if they will need to make other arrangements with the teacher.
Grading: Report Cards
Quarter 1 grades will be available to view in ParentVue/StudentVue during the week of October 31st - we will send additional information about when exactly they will be available to view. There will be two options to view your student’s end-of-quarter grades, either by viewing a PDF of the report card in the “Documents” section or by clicking on the report card option in the menu - which will appear once grades are available to view. Please note that we will not be mailing home copies of report cards.

Picture Re-Take Day is RESCHEDULED
NOVEMBER 16th IS THE NEW RE-TAKE DAY!
One of Lifetouch's cameras did not upload properly to their printing lab. This resulted in a number of families not receiving their pictures. The lab now has all of the data and is working quickly to print all of the missing photos. In order to get them to families and let them have time to decide if they desire retakes we are rescheduling retake day to November 16th. Thank you all for your patient and understanding as we navigated this!
If you are buying pictures for the first time this year, and are paying by cash or check, give the money directly to the photographer.
