Weekly Wrap-Up

Our 3rd Week in Kindergarten...

I apologize that our weekly wrap-up is coming to you a little later then usual this week.. my "smore" subscription ran out, so I needed to reregister for the year.

Anyhow, we had a wonderful 3rd week in Kindergarten. We are reviewing our letters and letter sounds, and learning some new words ("I" and "like"). We are continuing to work on being "first time listeners" when our teachers or classmates are speaking.

We have also jumped right into our literacy centers. These centers take place each morning during our literacy time. Literacy centers give the children a chance to practice and reinforce the skills they have learned during whole-group and small-group instruction. We have five centers: Word Work, Phonemic Awareness, Reading, Writing, and Alphabet. In each center there is a "must-do" activity and then there are "Can-do" activities for when they are finished. As the year goes on, this will also be the time the students are pulled in small group (by the teacher and assistant) for "Guided Reading" instruction. The centers this week were a lot of fun and everyone worked hard staying on task.

Library Reading Buddies

On Tuesday afternoons we are so lucky to have Library reading buddies. This is a Library middle school "choice class". Each week, 10 middle schoolers come and take 10 of our Kindergarteners to read to them in the Library. We are rotating through the students in our class, so your child should have an opportunity to go about once a month. They are loving it!!

Who I Am

In Social Studies, our current Unit is called, "Who I Am". The children are learning that even though they may have the same name as someone else (like the 4 Olivias in our class), or have the same hair color... there is so much more that makes us unique and special. We have been writing about all the things we care about and sharing our likes, dislikes and talents. We have discovered that we are all different and perfectly made by our God.
