The kids are so excited to begin working on fairy tales. We discussed elements of a fairy tale and the kids chose Beauty and the Beast as our first one to read aloud. Our Daily 5 rotations centered around fairy tales too. I was really excited to share with them the fairy tale my class wrote last year (it's amazing); they loved it. We also began working on our very own class fairy tale this week too. This is one of my most favorite activities. I can't wait to see how it turns out!
Many thanks to all of you for coming to your child's student-led conference. The kids were super excited to share their progress with you; I hope that y'all enjoyed participating in this type of conference with your child.
We've been having fun in math as we work to build fluency with addition. The kids have loved seeing how fast they can solve problems and learning new strategies to help increase their speed. Next week we will start working on fluency with subtraction.
Science was super cool this week. We learned how to classify rocks by their size. The kids sifted rocks and categorized them into three groups: pebbles, gravel, and sand. They learned that sand is a tiny rock. We also explored 3 types of sandpaper: fine, medium and coarse. Ask your child which type was rougher than the others and what they discovered through their experiments.
To finish our unit on maps, the kids had to apply what they learned and create a classroom map with their table teams. They had a great time collaborating and creating. You can check out our video of this activity under this section of the newsletter.
Report cards went home today. Please make sure to look inside your child's Friday Folder for this. Review his/her grades and then sign the envelope and return it on Monday. Also, inside your child's folder is spring pictures/class photo information. We have these taken on Apr. 4th.
We've got a lot of things coming up in the next 3 weeks so make sure to take a look at the Reminders section and the Notes section of the newsletter so you don't miss out on anything!
I hope you have a terrific weekend. The weather is supposed to be beautiful.
Take Care,
Ms. Gower
