The 2A Express

The Weekly Roundup

Hello there everyone.

Thank you for taking the time to browse through the first edition of our weekly bulletin.

This publication serves as a document where you can see what 2A has been participating in throughout the week and what we plan to be doing in the future.

So, please take the time to look through the bulletin, click on the images of your children engaged in learning and feel free to contact me with any queries or issues that may arise.

The First Week

A Great Start to the Year

So, the first full week of school will have officially ended when you read this.

The beginning of the school year is always a time of excitement, trepidation, and for some not a worry at all! Everyone entered the classroom door on Sunday and from the very first moment I knew that we were going to be a special classroom and have a great year. Each of the 2A teammates are all polite, talented, social and are an eager group of learners and individuals. I know that we will enjoy the transition through second and into third grade.

Please take the time to fill out the Parent Survey form below. This will enable us to crosscheck our list of phone numbers and email addresses, and allows me on a more personal note so read your thoughts regarding your child.

During the first week we have been reviewing our addition and subtraction facts to twenty with a specific focus on how we can use these strategies to help us solve problems with numbers greater than 20. Students have been using a variety of manipulatives to help them solve equations and word problems.

Check out the video below as a reference to the number bonds 2A is currently reviewing to make 10. They boogied to this this morning and will do so for most of next week as well!

What Makes Ten?

Reader's Workshop

The beginning of the year sees the students continue to build upon their reading stamina, selecting 'Just Right' books and try new strategies when reading. We will continue to foster a positive reading environment and mindset while continuing to strive to become a strong reader.

Writer's Workshop

In Writer's Workshop we have been exploring the writing process and where we can find big ideas as we begin to craft our own ‘personal narratives’, further continuing to build upon the effective habits of authors and writers.

On a related note, this week, Reading Kids A-Z passwords will be issued and the students of 2A will be a part of a special bootcamp on how to access their reading libraries.

Social Studies

Our classroom is a fledgling community at this time of year. So 2A has started to look closely at this community and other communities we are a part of to kick off our first Social Studies unit. Once these are identified we willl begin to dig deeper into the rights and responsibilities we have as citizens within these specific communities.

Things To Know:

PTA Request - Parent Directory

During Back to School Night the PTA is kindly requesting that you mention the following Parent Directory information to parents: The key information to convey: -The PTA Directory will be published this Fall.

It contains contact information for faculty, staff, school organizations, and students. - In an effort to “go green”, it will be available in Powerschool as a pdf file, and a limited number of hard copies will be printed.

Parents should go into Powerschool, click on the PTA Directory button, and verify the information is accurate and has a check in the box so it will appear in the directory. Information without a check in the box will not appear.

You must press the “submit” button for changes to be saved. You will need to do this for each student in the family.

The deadline to make changes will be the end of September.

Nut Allergies

There are students in your child’s class who have nut allergies. A child with a nut allergy can develop mild or severe reactions if they come in contact with the said allergen. Please take note of the following measures:

  • Please be considerate of your child’s classmates when sending in snacks (avoid sending any nuts or nut products)

  • Children should be encouraged to wash their hands before and after lunch, prior to returning to the classroom to avoid any cross-contamination.

  • For any special occasions, please be reminded that any food brought in to the class should be nut free.

  • Please contact the nurse office or your homeroom teacher if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Although we do not have any students with nut allergies in our classroom, please be aware that our students move between the classrooms during recess times when Red Flag days are in place.
