Parkside Post
December 2022
Hello Parkside Families!
Winter Break is a few weeks away and you may already be thinking about what you and your family will spend time doing while the children are off of school. I hope our students spend time playing outside, are with their friends and family, and do some reading each day. Children are never too old to read with an adult so snuggle up with a good book and read together! I encourage my own children to read a book that is also a movie! Once we finish the book, we have a movie night! It's a great way to encourage reading!
Our Holiday Shop will be from December 5-9 and your child will have the opportunity to purchase gifts for family and friends. Items range from as low as 50 cents up to $12. Your child's teacher will share the class date for shopping.
Please take time to look through this month's newsletter! There are many helpful tips and there is specific content area information from our academic coaches.
As always, we appreciate your support and your partnership in rising to the challenge each day!

Math This Month
Grades 2-5 will be receiving math flashcards to help build their fluency. Below are five fundamentals of math fact fluency.
1.Mastery must focus on fluency
2.Fluency develops in three phases
3.Knowing foundational facts must precede derived facts
4.Timed tests do not solely assess fluency
5.Students need substantial and enjoyable practice
Please continue to have your student practice their math facts for 5-10 minutes daily.
Literacy & Learning
As we move into the holiday season and your children have more down time from academics during the winter break, keep in mind they need to continue to read daily. To make this fun, try some of the following ideas at home. These will be fun for the whole family!
Reading Games:
Activities with Letter Tiles Making Words: (you can make the tiles with paper) have your child make as many different words as he/she can. Each time a word is made, have the child write it on a sheet of paper. Say the words aloud.
Name Game – Have your child make names of family members and friends with the letter tiles (can make these tiles using paper). Have him/her read the names. Then mix up the letters and see what other words can be made from the letters.
Alphabetical Order – have your child put a set of lowercase letters in correct alphabetical order.
Rhyming Pairs – make a word such as cat. Say the word and have the child say a rhyming word and make it with the letters below the first word. Letters such as b, s, p, etc…
Crossword Letters – you make a word, and then the child adds a word that starts from one of the letters. The word can go across or down.
Describing Words – make a describing word (red, thin, cold). Then have the child make a describing word and continue taking turns, making as many describing words as you can. Read the words. *Can also do this with action words (verbs)
Become a Volunteer!
All prospective volunteers are required to complete an online volunteer application, present a valid US-issued photo ID, and review volunteer orientation materials to become eligible to volunteer. The prospective volunteer cannot participate in any volunteer activities until these steps have been completed and the application has been approved by the school.
Steps to become a school-based volunteer (New & Returning):
1. Apply to volunteer by clicking "Apply to Volunteer".
2. Contact the school's volunteer coordinators, Mrs. Valencia or Ms. Wind, to complete the following:
* Present valid US-issued photo identification at the school
* Have badge picture taken at the school
* Complete volunteer orientation
3. Once the items in step two have been completed the school's volunteer contact will print your volunteer badge. Please note there is a 2-3 day delay before the badge will be printed and available for pickup. The school can issue you a temporary visitor pass until the badge is printed, if necessary.
