Adult Education and Literacy Awareness Week

Adult Education and Literacy Awareness Week begins on MONDAY! The Adult and Career Education Center will be kicking off the week with an awareness event on Saturday, September 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Walmart in Danville. Come out and learn about the literacy resources in our area, and follow the Adult and Career Education Center on Facebook to learn more about Adult Education and Literacy Awareness Week.

Passport to a Great Adventure

Parents, this year's Passport to a Great Adventure Reading Challenge started this past Monday! This year, students K-12 are invited to participate in this challenge, in which they log reading minutes in their Passports from September to April. Each grade level has a nightly at home reading goal:

  • Kindergarten - 2nd Grade: 15 minutes
  • 3rd - 5th Grade: 20 minutes
  • 6th - 12th grade: 30 minutes

Individual reading totals will be added to the school's overall goal. Students will have the opportunity to win monthly, quarterly, and year-end grand prizes. Watch this video for more information. Happy reading!

Mrs. Leigg, Japanese teacher at George Washington High School, was honored with the Educator of the Year award at the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce's annual awards event.

Tiny Tidbits: Small bits of news from DPS!

- Thank you to all of our grandparents who showed up for various Grandparents Day events throughout the district!

- Congratulations to Ms. Reynolds and Ms. C. Tucker for being staff members of the week at Park Avenue!

- In our First In Math program, Gibson is in first place, with 8,124 problems solved! Currently, Ms. Hogan's class is the top problem-solving class in the district with 4,212 problems solved. One of her students is the top problem solver in the district at 900 problems solved!

- Congratulations to our middle school Eagles football team who won 38-6 against Fieldsdale-Collinsville!

School Attendance Awareness Month

September is School Attendance Awareness Month. Danville Public Schools is committed to reducing chronic absenteeism and addressing factors that cause students to miss school. With our High Fives for Attendance Campaign, we're aiming to get the whole Danville community involved in this effort. As you see our students in the community, give them High Fives, reminding them to be in school five days per week. Let your children know how important it is to be present and engaged!
