RISE, 2.8 GPA, and Academic Probation
Of of the new methods to allow students to take Math and English courses is to have an unweighted GPA of 2.8 or higher. Another method is to take the new RISE exam. It is a very difficult exam and there are no study guides for it. This exam can only be taken two times in the course of ten years.
Sufficed to say, we need to avoid having to retake another exam or delay admission into Math and English courses! To guarantee that OECHS students stay on pace in their graduation requirements for OECHS and CCCC, they need to maintain a 2.8 GPA.
If students have a GPA below a 2.8, they will be placed on Academic Probation, meaning that they will only be permitted to engage in only one club activity per week. The rest of the club time in the afternoon will be devoted to increasing their grades and overall GPA.
Please contact Mr. Strope (james.strope@onslow.k12.nc.us) if you have any questions!

English
English I Honors: Students are contiuing to work on their Drama unit. We are completing or study of Romeo and Juliet with a test on Tuesday November 5. They have also been placed into groups to modernize a scene in the play. These are to be recorded and reviewed in class on Wednesday. We will begin Unit 6 on Thursday, with our study of Short Fiction. The grading period for the second six weeks has now ended. We begin the third and final grading period next week.
English IV Honors: Students completed their study of the Elizabethan Age by writing Shakespearian Insult Sonnets, adhering to the strict sonnet format. Students will begin a short study of the history of the King James Bible. Please note that the focus of the study is not religious in nature. The focus is to understand the literary and cultural value of King James’ contribution to literature. In addition, students will begin a study of the Age or Reason and Enlightenment in British literature.
As we move into November, students will begin finalizing their Graduation Project task hours, portfolios, and presentation PowerPoint. This year students will be allowed to present the major portion of their presentation using a video format. Students will present their project orally, present required components via video, and wrap up the presentation with a time for Q and A. There are still some students who have not completed the required 15 hours. Parents please ensure students are working toward the November 22 completion date. Senior presentations will occur at Onslow Early College High School on December 5, 2019. Students are required to dress in business attire for their presentation.
Math
Honors Math 2: First period ended the second six weeks with an average of a 90 and second period's average was a 91! Students took a test on Friday that covered both Unit 4 Basic Geometry and Unit 5 Congruency. Next week students will finally learn how to write a two column proof using their knowledge from the previous two units. The plan is for students to have several online activities to understand proofs and finish with a quiz on Thursday.
Honors Math 4: We have completed the unit on Law of Sines, Law of Cosines, and Vectors so next week we will begin working on Trig Identities. This is the third, and final, trig unit for the course. Monday we will start by learning and working with the three types of Basic Trig Identities. Students must memorize these identities for use throughout the unit, and we will have a quiz at the beginning of class Tuesday where they just have to correctly write down the identities. Tuesday will be the beginning of Verifying Trig Identities. This can be an especially challenging concept for some students so we will be doing additional practice and spend multiple days on verifying. By Thursday we should get to work on Solving Trig Equations. We will have a quiz covering the first three sections in the unit once we complete Solving Trig Equations.
Social Studies
Civics and Economics: This week we have moved along from the Constitution (the kids did amazing on their tests) and have started learning about The Presidency. We have looked at the Qualifications for office, and Order of Succession. We had Mrs. Lang visit our class on Wednesday and tell us all about our Due Process rights under the Bill of Rights. We really enjoyed her talk. Next week we will finish our study of the Presidency by examining his job and responsibilities. We will have our test on Friday of next week.
AP WH: We had a rather short week this week due to the Pre-ACT test on Wednesday. We concluded our study of Arab Cultures by looking at the influence of Islam in Southeast Asia and West Africa. Next week we will look at Post-Classical China and Feudalism in Japan and Europe. We will be having our test on these topics on Friday, November 15th. Both A and B day will be taking their tests on this day together in the Sophomore Big Room.
American History I Honors: : We have completed and tested Unit IV: Religion & Reform. Next we will move West with our theme being “Manifest Destiny”. We watched the Story of Us video:” Westward” today/Friday & will begin study guide work on Monday. Our pace quickens as we enter the holidays and our final grading period so it is imperative that students are focused in class and disciplined in their class, seminar, & homework times. The Unit work schedule is posted on the board in our classroom & on Teams.
Science
Chem Honors: Airbag Stoichiometry Lab is due on Monday. We just finished Unit 8 and will begin working on Unit 9: Phase Changes. We will do a Temperature Curve Lab on Friday.
APES: We are working on Unit 4. Next week we have Unit 4 Quiz and the Unit 4 Progress Check is due midnight between 11/6 and 11/7. Students are also working on a NC River Basin Project for this unit
