Keeping Kosher

David Fang C2/C4

Overview

The Jewish people have their own specific dietary law called "Kashrut". Food that is acceptable for consumption is called kosher food. Jewish people that observe Jewish dietary laws often refer to it as "keeping kosher". There are many dietary laws and many of them are quite specific. For example, many birds (such as pelican, owl and eagle) cannot be eaten, milk from impure animals cannot be consumed, milk and meat may not be eaten together either, no eggs may contain blood, and only fishes with fins and scales can be eaten. Knishes, bagels, blintzes and matzoh ball soups are some very typical Jewish and kosher foods.
