NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
February 21, 2020
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
A huge thank you to all the volunteers that make Ned Shred Days possible! This is truly a very special event for our school and our community and sets us apart from other BVSD schools.
Overall, NED SHRED was a success - the kids had a blast. Overall, 92% of the K-5 grade students participated. Nearly a dozen students participated through IGNITE and had a wonderful time with the program volunteers. Nearly 30% of the students were able to participate because of our fee waiver program (this is one of the many activities the PTA's fundraising efforts support). The numbers of participants for downhill skiing, snowboarding, and nordic skiing were, respectively, 142, 57, 11. Many students took the opportunity to try a new activity.
It is important to acknowledge and celebrate Eldora's generous contribution for NED SHRED. We are their home school and they take care of us (not to mention the MS/HS ski programs). No other school is able to send their students to Eldora's Cool School for $50 per student for TWO days (remember - rentals, lift tickets, and lessons are included each day). The current estimate is that Eldora's generosity towards NES and Ned Shred comes in at approximately $50,000. For many of our students, this is the only opportunity they get to enjoy our local hill.
Our days at Eldora were filled with fun. However, there were some bumps, as there always are, in executing a 6-day program for over 200 students. I ask that we all exercise patience and understanding when issues arise as the entire event is organized by parent volunteers for students to learn new skills and have fun in our beautiful mountain setting. Thank you again to the parents who took on this tremendous feat. We are all grateful for your time and efforts!
Have a great weekend,
Laurel

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social Emotional Learning at NES (Feb 17- 21, 2020)
"Got good listening skills?" We merely hear with our ears, but the Chinese word for "listening" encapsulates the necessity of using our entire bodies (eyes, ears, shoulders, hands, hearts, and minds) to truly understand others. This week, students beefed up their ability to listen with their whole bodies (Whole Body Listening with Larry) Primary grades practiced following directions by using self-talk to remind themselves what to do. Second graders held "peace roses" while sharing their ideas with peers. Their peers listened carefully so they could repeat the ideas back. Third and fourth graders played "listening games" to see if they could hear both the small details given, as well as listen for big picture messages. Fifth graders listened to each other's diverse stories and backgrounds to empathize with their classmates.
