A Message from Mr. Smith
Greetings from HMS!
In this week's edition of The Hingham Middle School Connection, you'll find a great deal of information about things for our students to do and get involved in outside of the school day. We believe that it is very important for our students' health and happiness to find things to do beyond the classroom here at school. There are community service groups like the Ambassador Club, interest based groups like the Art Club or the Lego Robotics club, and even groups that teach life skills like the Cooking Club.
Please take the time to look these groups over and encourage your middle schooler to stay after school and try something new, and remind them that there is no long term commitment; just try something new!
Grade Eight Washington DC Trip
We are happy to share with you that planning is moving forward for this year's Grade Eight DC Trip As you may already know, due to several factors we have made the decision to alter the format, dates, and length of our trip. Based on our previous experience we have decided to focus our time on DC only.
The important changes for this year are:
We are traveling Wednesday April 26, 2023 through Friday April 28, 2023
We are now flying instead of the extended bus trip and focusing only on Washington, D.C.
The pricing has been updated to reflect these changes since our previous plans back in spring 2022. For those of you who had previously registered, you will be contacted by email with how this affects you shortly - you do not need to re-register..
We have scheduled a parent meeting to go over our updated plans for Thursday October 20, 2022 at 7:00 pm in the middle school auditorium. Please join us.
If you'd like to register for this trip:

Please find a brochure outlininig our trip attached, and do not hesitate to Mark McCulloch (mmcculloch@hinghamschools.org) with any questions.
Thank you.
One Book, One School
On Wednesday, November 2, HMS will welcome author Varsha Bajaj to our school as the culminating event for this year's One Book, One School program. During her visit, Ms. Bajaj will speak with students about her novel, Count Me In, some of the major themes of the novel, and discuss the writing process. Additionally, students who would like to have their copy of the novel personalized will have an opportunity to do so. For your convenience, we have attached an order form to this newsletter.
HMS Helpful Hints
As we all know, regular, on-time attendance is a key factor in both academic success and a student’s overall happiness at school. We strongly encourage students to arrive on-time, every day. However, we understand that this is not always possible. Below is some helpful information for families around common attendance questions.
Reporting an Absence
Parents/guardians should call the school if a student is to be absent from school. Dial 781-741-1550 and select "1" when prompted. In addition, on the first day a student returns to school after being absent, the student must bring a note signed by a parent or guardian to the homeroom teacher.
Tardy to School
If a student arrives late to school, they should report to the Library Media Center up until 8:15 with a note excusing their tardiness. After 8:15 they should report to the main office. Chronic tardiness may result in disciplinary action.
How to Dismiss a Student
If a student is to be dismissed early from school, they must bring a note signed by a parent/guardian to the designated area (either Library Media Center up until 8:15 or the main office after) explaining the reason and time for the dismissal. The student will be given a dismissal slip to be presented to the teacher at the time of dismissal. Whoever is picking up the student must come into the main office to sign out the student. If no note is given, a student will not be dismissed until the teacher receives a call from the main office. Please allow extra time to locate and call the student down to the office.
Bus Reminder
All students should be riding their assigned bus only. If students need to travel together they should plan on staying after school and taking the late bus!
Term 1 Mid-term
The mid-term point for term 1 was this past week. Please take a moment to review your child’s progress with them. You can follow these steps to view mid-term averages on your X2 portal:
select the “MY INFO” top tab
select the “TRANSCRIPT” side tab
your child’s quarter 1 mid-term averages will be listed under the column heading of “Q1prg”.
If you are experiencing login difficulties please contact Mrs. Graney in the guidance office at mgraney@hinghamschools.org or 781-741-1550.
Questions or concerns regarding your child’s class average should be directed to the appropriate teacher.
Calling All Veterans!
HMS is proud to announce its first Veterans Day Assembly & Breakfast! Pumpkin Carving
Would your child like to learn how to carve a pumpkin like a pro and make creations like the one shown here?
On Thursday October 27th from 2:00 - 4:00 Mrs. Flaherty will teach a small group of students the techniques and skills needed to carve pumpkins into works of art. Students need to sign up in room 305 as space is limited. Students will also need to bring a pumpkin big enough to carve that day and schedule a ride home at 4:00.
It's sure to be a "spook-tacular" time!
