Students Inspired by "The Dot"
International Dot Day began when Terry Shay introduced his class to Peter H. Reynold’s book The Dot on September 15, 2009.
Since then, this date has been celebrated each year as International Dot Day — a day for classes to explore the story’s powerful themes: bravery, creativity, and self-expression.
The Dot tells the story of a caring art teacher who reaches a reluctant student in a remarkably creative way.
In Peter’s book, the teacher encourages the student to begin a journey of self discovery and creativity, starting with a simple dot on a piece of paper. Transformed by this journey, the student goes on to inspire others.
Dot Activities at South
In Library, Mrs. Bowman read The Dot to all of classes Sept. 4th-7th. Students a a Growth Mindset survey online. They also created dot bookmarks to keep in their books with dot markers. (Walk into any class and you will see they all are actually using them!) Mrs. Bowman will soon read the sequels to The Dot, Ish, and Sky Color throughout the year to continue the growth mindset discussion.
In Music, Mrs. Hunter created songs using quotes from the book as lyrics that the students then sang and played on xylophones and drums. Mrs. Hunter will be creating songs using quotes from the sequels that the students will then sing, play on xylophones, and drums. (Ish = mid year and Sky Color = end of the year). Students also had the opportunity to create their own melodies and songs about the book.
In Gym, Mr. Callighan helped create the "Golden Dot" awards and teaches students aboutan important character trait each month.
Our school counselor, Miss McGee, led a lesson that ties in specifically to The Dot, discussing what growth mindset is and how to use it, which leads into her brain lessons for the rest of the year. Brain "reset" kits were introduced to help encourage mind breaks and growth mindset.
In art, Mrs. Bertoli had students create dots on their own as part of our "Dot Masterpiece" in the front hallway. Other students also created "Yart" (yard art) for South's exterior. They created these in teams to work on team building.

Nutrition Club
The Nutrition Club provides supplemental weekend food for children at North, South and the Middle School each Friday during the school year. We all struggle at some point. The goal of this program is to ease a bit of the struggle. You are welcome to sign-up at any point during the school year. The food will be sent home in a plastic bag that can fit inside a school backpack or be carried. You only complete one form per family. List all of your children that you would like to participate. Each child in your family will receive their own cinch sack or bag on Fridays throughout the school year. This program is the result of the generosity of the Danville community!
