Highlights from last week....

Wow, what a week! Our friends did a wonderful job creating the best leprechaun traps, thank you for your support in this activity. Because he is a tricky little guy, we did not catch him, however, he did do a great job trashing our room, leaving candy and leaving some remnants of his visit. We discussed what it was that he left us and wrote about it. We also wrote about what he might have looked like if we did catch him. Our friends are great writers!

In Reader's Workshop, we reviewed the strategies that we learned thus far. They are doing a great job using their reading strategies! We also worked on building our schema, which is our background knowledge, to help us read.

In phonics, we focused on digraphs.

In Math, we worked on number bonds and number sentences. We focused on adding or "putting numbers together" this week. We also created number bonds to match our number sentences.

In Science, we began our month long unit on life cycles. This week we focused on caterpillars and butterflies. We read some non-fiction books and compared them to some fiction books that we have read.

In our Second Step program, we continued to learn about our own feelings and how they can change.

We read many of Eric Carle's books and discussed the similarities and differences of each of his books. The students can now identify Eric Carle books based on the illustrations. We also made several text to text connections during this author study.

A peek at our learning this week....

Well, Happy Spring!! Our math and reading skills are soaring!

In Reader's Workshop, we will be working on how readers think while they read. We will be using our schema as we read our books. The kids LOVE sharing their schema with us and then we make a big deal when we learn something new and we discuss how we just added to our schema. It is so much fun learning with your children!

In phonics, we will focus on rhyming, word families and short vowels. After assessing our friends, we realized that these are the areas that need the most work. Please rhyme with your children at home. Remember rhyming words are words that sound the same at the end of the word.

In Math, we will be working on number bonds and number sentences. We will be focusing on subtracting or "breaking numbers apart" this week. We will focus on number stories and work on acting them out, writing the sentence and creating a number bond to match the sentence. It is amazing to see our friends in math, they are doing great!

In Science, we will continue our month long unit on life cycles. This week we will focus on chicks. We will read some non-fiction books and compare them to some fiction books that we have read.

In Social Studies, we will really concentrate on identifying sequential actions, such as first, next and last in stories and use them describe personal experiences. Last week we practiced using these words with sequence cards. This week, we will try to create stories using these words.

In our Second Step program, we will continue to learn about our own feelings and how they can change.

Book Orders

We have placed the book orders for this month. They should be arriving this week. As soon as they come in, we will send them home. Thank you!
