Message from the Director
I hope this week's update finds you and your family healthy and well. It's a challenging time, but if we stick together and follow social distancing, we will help flatten the curve and help keep our friends and families alive and well.
Many of you may have heard by now that the Governor and Superintendent of Public Instruction have determined that in-person schooling will not continue this year. That does not mean that learning ends. Your student should continue to access learning through a variety of distance methods, including Google Classroom, Remind, Zoom Meetings, and work packets (among other options).
It is expected that each teacher provides at least 30 minutes of new content per class period day for Monday - Thursday for students. At WST this means that students should have on average 1.5 hours per day four days per week of new learning happening for their WST class.
Instructors at WST are working diligently to help provide access for your student to distance learning options. If your student says they are not able to access the information, haven't heard from their instructor, or your student does not have access to online options, please contact the instructor right away so that they may work with your student to ensure access, even if that means providing physical packets of learning materials.
Check in with your student's instructor as many are now holding regular Zoom meetings for their classes. This check-in is important to student well-being and to keeping the continuity of learning happening. Please work with your student to help them get access to the meetings.
If you do not have access to technology or the internet, please let us know so we can work to help support you gaining access. Many of the districts that send to WST are working on providing students with access to technology to ensure learning continues.
During this time, your student may make up any work that was either not turned in prior to school closure, or work that they would like to improve. In addition, all students will receive a pass or no credit for all new learning that occurs weekly.
I know many parents are trying to work from home, help their students stay on task with their learning, and figure out how to best follow social distancing expectations. Many of our instructors (and myself!) are in the same position - it is struggle to keep my teenager on task with his work daily. Remember, though, to give grace to yourself and your child. These unprecedented times create challenges we never imagined and grace right now is so critical.
One final note, the annual WST Senior Celebration is always a time of joy and excitement for West Sound Tech. I am working on a way that we may still get to experience this event remotely to support all of our seniors and their success this year. Stay tuned!
Thank you for your continued support of your child and their learning!
