DOLPHIN SPLASH
Volume 8: October 3 - 7, 2022
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, Paula Saavedra
Dear El Marino Families,
I am excited to join the El Marino community and look forward to working with and meeting you. Mr. Torres and I will be working together to provide the best school experience for our students, families, and community.
I have been in education for over 20 years. I was a classroom teacher for 13 years teaching 2nd-5th grades in both dual immersion and English only settings. I am Spanish bilingual. I have been an administrator for 9 years and have worked at both the elementary and middle school levels.
My philosophy of education is that every child is a capable learner who when given the right tools and held to the highest standards can achieve success. Together I know we can provide for our students the rich environment needed for them to be successful and happy.
Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
Paula Saavedra

Observing Yom Kippur
For all the families observing, we wish you Gmar Tov and Tzmol Kal.
Yom Kippur is observed October 4th and 5th this year, the Day of Atonement, is known as the holiest day of the Jewish year. Leading up to and on that day, Jews traditionally ask for forgiveness for our wrongdoings from God and from our fellow human beings.
If any families want to share some pictures or videos of how their family observes, please email me at zoila@elmarinopta.org. With your permission, we can share on our next Dolphin Splash and with the teachers as well.
Cleared Volunteers for Read-Alouds this Hispanic Heritage Month
Cleared volunteers, please ask your teachers if they’d like a read-aloud for Hispanic Heritage Month and offer your availability. You can email and see if your child’s teacher would like an in-class reading or a library time reading.
Don’t have a book? You can look to our wonderful librarian, Jessica Woods. Ms. Woods has a Hispanic Heritage Month bin filled with great books in the library. She welcomes families to borrow and return for their reading.
El Marino along with CCUSD celebrates National Disability Awareness Month in October
This month is National Disabilities Employment Awareness Month, but CCUSD has traditionally celebrated October as National Disability Awareness Month and El Marino PTA celebrates as well. As families we can take a great appreciation of the contributions that people with disabilities have made in the workforce to keep our nation’s economy strong and reaffirming our commitment to ensure equal opportunities for all citizens.
“This effort to educate the public about the issues related to disability and employment began in 1945, when Congress enacted Public Law 176, declaring the first week of October each year as National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. In 1962, the word “physically” was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. Some 25 years later, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month.”
We are super lucky to have a Special Education Committee and they are planning some wonderful opportunities for students and families to increase disability awareness in our school community. Look for those opportunities in the next few weeks.
This is a good time to think about the appropriate vocabulary to use about disability and to be better informed about the disabled community. Here are some resources to help be better informed.

ALLEM Fall 2022 Pledge Drive - Keep Up The Good Work!
As of Friday, September 30, ALLEM has raised close to $130,000, which puts us well below our fundraising goal of $250,000. There have been a lot of changes in the last 6 weeks since school started--with plenty of staffing changes, most notably a new Principal! As we settle in for a great year ahead, please help us reach our fundraising goal so we can make sure we have the funds to pay our Target Language Support Providers (TLSPs). They make our immersion program successful!
We have updated our chart of participation by classroom, and unfortunately, we are well below historical participation rates. For instance, at this time last year, every class was above 40% participation, and a third of the classes had participation over 80%.
If you have not participated yet this year, please do so at https://allem.givecloud.co/. While the suggested donation amount is $750 per student, ANY meaningful amount you can give makes an impact for our classrooms. If we fail to meet our fundraising goals, then we may have to make cuts to the Target Language Support Provider program, including cutting hours, or we may lose some TLSPs. We don't want that to happen as they are vital to our language learning program for our students.
If you have already donated, please get out the word about why you support ALLEM and the TLSPs, and encourage others to participate. The closer we get to our fundraising goal, the less we have to come back to you for additional fundraising events throughout the year. As we are all parent volunteers, this helps us focus on our students and reduces our need to distract you with additional fundraising requests throughout the year.
To help us get out the word, we're extending the pledge drive for an additional week, until October 14. Special prizes will be awarded to the class with the highest fundraising amount as well as the top three participation classrooms. We will also add a special prize this year for the most improved classroom, for the highest increase in participation from September 30 to October 14.
THANK YOU!

Idle Free Schools: Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!
El Marino Language School’s Green 5 Committee is starting an idling reduction campaign this week.
Did you know that if everyone in the U.S. stopped idling for five minutes a day it would be equivalent to taking five hundred thousand cars off the road and saving 1.6 million tons of CO2? El Marino is supporting this campaign and encouraging families to reduce student’s exposure to air toxins that are emitted from idling vehicles.
In the next two weeks you will see new no idling signs posted outside the school. We are also asking parents and guardians to sign pledge forms that they won’t idle unnecessarily. These forms will be sent out by room parents.
Save money and protect the air by turning off your car when waiting more than 10 seconds.
