Updates for Intro to Computer Science
- All students journals/notebooks should be set up.
- You should be in Course E.
- The conditional lessons should be complete and should have been a success!
TIPS: Make sure that you hide the entire course in code.org EXCEPT the lessons you want students to see. This will prevent students from breezing through the curriculum.
Also, remember that every online lesson should start with the unplugged lesson. This curriculum is intended to be blended.
- Include vocabulary daily and make sure that students are recording their reflections in their journals or in the online classroom.
Update for Intro to Programming
- Don't have your microbits yet? Need more Microbits? Please notify Mrs. Glass. These are essential in the curriculum. Also, Mrs. Glass is delivering the Battery packs, USB cables and speakers to campuses. Please notify me if you need them ASAP. I'm making the rounds but can prioritize those in need.
- Include vocabulary daily and make sure that students are recording their reflections in their journals or in the online classroom.
Update for Fundamentals of Computer Science
- All students journals/notebooks should be set up.
- All classes should be moving into HTML (Unit 2). Make sure you cover these lessons thoroughly. As the lessons build, it becomes more complex.

- Students should be working on Broadcasting.

Update on the Congressional App Challenge
I want to give a shout out to the 7 campuses that knocked this challenge out of the park!
Please check out the 13 student-created apps that were created and submitted to the Congressional App Challenge (nationally) by 23 students from the following 7 campuses: Drew, Shotwell, Lewis, Grantham, Hoffman, Jones, and Plummer MS!
Please congratulate these students and their teachers for their hard work and submissions. They will all be highlighted by our district Congressional Representatives (Sheila Jackson Lee and Sylvia Garcia) in December during Computer Science Education Week (we call it the Hour of Code) which will be a district-wide focus again this year.
Next competition opportunities for students!
The Texas Youth Creators Awards, previously named the Texas Media Awards, promote excellence in amateur media production and its importance in life-long learning. Since 1988, it has been an annual, statewide event open to school-aged Texas residents. Each entry will be reviewed and submitted by a sponsoring librarian to ensure copyright compliance and to highlight the important roles librarians play in technology integration and instruction. Qualified, impartial volunteers judge entries on criteria for each individual contest division.
Students with winning entries receive awards at the Texas Youth Creators Awards Program during the Texas Library Association Annual Conference. The most outstanding entry over all earns the Bob Bennett “Best of Show” Award. Texas Youth Creators Awards Program sponsors include the Texas Youth Creators Awards Committee, the TLA Media and Related Technologies Round Table, and the Texas Association of School Librarians.
You will need to submit a separate form for each entry, listing only the student or students that worked on that particular project.
Entry Deadline: All materials must be postmarked by January 10, 2020. (which is the WEEK we return to school from the holiday.
Please share this website with your students and complete this brief google form so that I can determine interest for the district.

Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries during Computer Science Education Week December 9 - 15, 2019. Help us celebrate by hosting an hour of code this year! We’ve put together resources to help teachers, coaches, and administrators from Pre-K to high school host events in their classrooms and buildings.
How will this impact your classroom! We would like for students to get an opportunity to develop websites, games and even apps that impact their school, community and even the world! More information to come!
