# Mr. Judge's 2nd Grade Telegraph!!

## Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a safe, restful and VERY HAPPY Holiday! I was able to visit family in and had a very restful, special holiday. The weather has been COLD!! PLEASE be sure your child comes to school with a coat/jacket and weather appropriate clothing. I think we're expected to have chilly weather until the middle of the week. BURR!!!!

## What's Happening This Week!

2nd Grade will start the new year off with an exciting week of learning!! For Science/Social Studies the class will be learning about American Symbols - identifying the significance of American Symbols such as Statue of Liberty, Liberty Bell, Uncle Sam, and the bald eagle.. For math, the class will model measuremen, continue with problem solving. For spelling,Unit 13: called, just, where, most, know, For phonics: we will focus on kn, gn and review suffix rules. For writing, we will work with personal narratives with a focus on organization and hooks (brilliant beginnings). In reading, the class will have an overview of Folktales (specifically, Fables, Myths, and Legends).

## Math Practice!

Here are some of the math skills we will be working on this week. Below, I have provided what the math skill is, along with the report card skill the students are responsible for. I hope you find these helpful, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!

## Problem 1: Create a Story Problem

Report Card Skill:

Generates and solves story problems for a given mathematical number sentence

## Problem 2: Counting Money

Report Card Skill (*3rd Nine Weeks):

Determines the value of a collection of coins up to \$1.00

## Problem 3: Locating Numbers on a Number Line

Report Card Skill:

Names and locates a whole number on an open number line

## Problem 4: Problem Solving

Report Card Skill:

Adds and subtracts 2-digit numbers and explains strategies used

## Problem 5: Measurement

Report Card Skill:

Measures to find the length of an object using standard units and tools

## Problem 6: Telling Time

Report Card Skill (*4th Nine Weeks):

Reads and writes time to the nearest minute
