Greetings Caruso Families,
We are off and running! Thank you for sending us children who were energized, on-time, and most importantly, ready to learn, during our opening days.
ELA and Math fall MAP testing will take place for all students on Tuesday, August 29th and Thursday, August 31st. Sixth and seventh graders will also take part in the MAP Science test on Friday, September 1. We are excited to continue using MAP as it allows us to regularly monitor student growth and achievement. Please make sure you child is on time with a charged Chromebook and ready to do their best!
On another note, feel free to ask your child what they took away from my opening student grade level presentations on Monday. We covered topics including standards-based learning, digital footprints, and grade-level specific themes (6th grade - Getting Involved, 7th grade - Leadership, 8th grade - Leaving a Legacy).
Sincerely,
Brian Bullis

1ST/FINAL POSTING - STUDENT CELL PHONE EXPECTATIONS
Please reinforce the following expectations with your child as we kick-off the new year:
- Cell phones are expected to be turned off and in student lockers from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
- Exceptions to this expectation are if a teacher gives explicit permission to use a cell phone in their specific classroom.
- If the student needs to call home during the school day they can come to the main office.
- Refrain from texting or calling your child during the school day.
- If your child ever calls or texts you from their cell phone to share that they are feeling sick, please instruct them to go to the nurse and they can call you from there.
If a student does not meet our cell phone expectations the following consequences will be applied:
First time: student conference (warning)—student picks up cell phone at the end of the day
Second time: student conference, lunch detention, parent picks up cell phone from the school
Third time (or more): student conference, two lunch detentions, parent picks up cell phone from the school
1ST POSTING – LAKE COUNTY ATTENDANCE WEEK
1st/FINAL Posting - Debate Club
1ST/FINAL POSTING - PICTURE DAY IS ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7TH IN THE A.M.
1ST/FINAL POSTING - HOMEWORK CLUB
Homework club will start on Tuesday, August 29th. The club meets in the mornings and the afternoons in either Ms. Gold's room (E-6), Mr. Tomer's room (E-3) or Mrs. Reisman's room (E-8).
Homework club offers students an opportunity to finish their homework in a quiet, structured setting. Regularly, there are also 8th-grade peer tutors on hand ready to assist attendees. In the afternoon there is a late bus which students can ride to get home after doing their homework.
Homework club is FREE and open to any student who needs a quiet atmosphere--there is no need to sign up ahead of time. Below is our schedule. Homework club schedules will be available for parents during open house.
Homework club schedule for 2017-2018
AM: 7:10-7:55 PM: 3:00-3:45.
1st/FINAL Posting - Gear Up For Learning
Gear Up is a program to help with organization, work completion and other executive functioning skills. If you would like your son/daughter to check in and check out with Mrs. Boruszak and Mrs. Stocco every day, we will speak to your son/daughter and send home a contract for you both to sign.
GUFL will start on Thursday, September 7, 2017. Both teachers are in the Learning Commons at a table from 7:30 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. In the afternoon, Mrs. Stocco is in the library from 3-3:30 pm to check out the sixth graders. Mrs. Boruszak is in her room, which is adjacent to the back door where the buses leave from, room E7. This makes it easy for any seventh or eighth graders to check out with her.
The student would need a basic assignment notebook that is easily carried between school and home (inexpensive---$10 max). The assignment notebook would be filled out by the student during the course of the day and reviewed with one of us prior to leaving school.
In the morning, the same procedure basically takes place; we check to see if the assignment notebook was signed and if the student has the completed homework. At this time, we will also work on organizing binders and other executive functioning skills.
Even with our district use of Teacher Ease, this piece is designed to assist the student and set them up for success.
Please let your child’s homeroom teacher know if you are interested in this program and we will contact you.
