School Safety Update
At the March 15th Lakeside Cluster Summit, we had the privilege of hearing from Director of Public Safety for DCSS, Bradley Gober.
He provided the attendees with some information regarding his department and we want to provide a few highlights.
1) DCSS has their own public safety department. The county does not contract these services with an outside party..
2) All school resource officers (SRO) with DCSS are state certified officers.
3) The school resource officer assigned to EES is Joseph Bielicki and he is stationed at Henderson Middle School.
4) All SRO's are certified in Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERT).
5) In addition to the SRO's there is a Emergency Response Team (ERT) within the department.
6) The ERT members are trained to work with children with special needs.
7) The number to call to report any suspicious behavior (school grounds, social media, etc) is 678-676-1810
8) The department operates on a 24/7, 365 schedule.
Additionally, EES receives visits from members of the Safe Schools program during the school year. Our most recent visited was
graded out at 100%. You can learn more about the department by visiting; http://www.dekalbschoolsga.org/public-safety/

LHS Construction Advisory Committee Call for Candidates
Lakeside High School has announced a call for parent and community members who are interested in serving on the Principal Advisory Council’s Construction Advisory Committee (CAC) for a significant E-SPLOST (Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) capital improvement project.
This committee serves to increase stakeholder and community engagement in the design, planning, and construction phases of the school’s E-SPLOST project.
Project Summary: Addition to Lakeside HS
· 38-classroom addition (and necessary core space additions and/or parking spaces) and installation of synthetic turf at football practice field
· Budget: $26,990,000
· Architect Request for proposals (RFP) going out on Feb 2018
· CAC selection and training: Feb - May 2018
· Anticipated Construction Jul 2020 - Mar 2022 (subject to change)
The Principal Advisory Council will select five members to the CAC, not including the principal, who will be an ex-officio member. A minimum of two members will be Principal Advisory Council members. This selection will take place in an open meeting of the Principal Advisory Council. All CAC members must complete a Conflict of Interest form at the initial CAC training conducted by the District. These forms must be completed by all CAC members prior to the first meeting. Access the form and additional information by visiting the District's E_SPLOST V site: http://www.dekalbschoolsga.org/e-splost/
Participation in the CAC may require a 1-3 year commitment. In extenuating circumstances, a capital improvement project may require up to 5 years to complete. The number of CAC meetings will be set by the CAC membership under guidance from the Council. The deadline to apply for the Construction Advisory Committee is March 22, 2018 at 11:59pm.

Henderson Middle School Foundation Annual Campaign, March 5–23 – Please Help Your Future School
Help your child’s future school by making a donation to the HMS Foundation! The foundation’s goal is to provide educational resources to the school, to enrich the school’s academic and cultural offerings. Because of the foundation, HMS has been working towards becoming a STEM school - and we are making progress toward that goal! This year, HMS has one STEM team in 7th and 8th grades, and they have been a great success. Next year STEM will go school wide so your child can benefit in 6th grade!
But it’s not just about STEM. We have supported teacher resources, equipment, training, student activities together with PTSA, and are currently funding a bilingual liaison to help fill the gap left by having an interpreter only part time.
This means that donations made today will go to programs that directly impact your rising elementary student. Your participation will help ensure the HMS Foundation can continue supporting the school. Remember – a strong school makes for a strong neighborhood.
How to donate: Please visit the website http://www.hmsfoundation.org/donate-now.html to make a donation online or for information how to donate by check. If you have questions, please email info@hmsfoundation.org.
PTSA Program and Parent Resources on Handling Student Stress, Anxiety, and Depression
Parenting is hard work and there is no doubt that the middle school years are particularly challenging. Kids are growing physically and emotionally at their own speed – some quickly, some slowly – each with their own unique circumstances. We want our kids to be prepared for high school, not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well.
Mark your calendars now for Tuesday, April 24th at 6:30pm when the PTSA will host a program for parents that will address stress and anxiety among middle school students (and the sources of stress, including, but not limited to bullying and social media).
Our speaker will be Dr. Noriel Lim, assistant professor at Emory University, who specializes in evidence-based approaches to the treatment of anxiety and depression among children, teens and adults.
Developing skills to cope with stress, anxiety and depression are critical, as there has been a documented rise in all three in recent years among middle and high school students.
The PTSA is also adding a new section to the PTSA Website titled “Parent Resources” and while some of the content will be school-specific, the majority of resources are for you as parents. We don’t know what will cause our kids stress – it could be their grades or worrying over things they cannot control, the bus ride home or what to wear to school one day. It is important to pay attention, and while fixing the problem isn’t always possible (or helpful), developing skills to persevere in the face of hardship is.
Please reach out to the PTSA if you have questions, concerns or helpful information you would like to share.
Sincerely,
Amy Kirsch and Mary Sullivan
PTSA Co-Presidents
