Biography
Kofi Atta Annan ( born 8 april 1938 ). He is Ghanaian diplomat who served as the 7th secretary of the United Nations from January 1997 to December 2006 ( 10 years ). Annan and the United Nations were the co-recipients of the noble peace prize for their work, for a better organized and more peaceful world. He is the founder and the chairman of the Kofi Annan foundation, as well as being the chairman of the Elders, a group founded by Nelson Mandela.

Early life
Kofi Annan was born in the Kofandros of Kumasi in the Gold Coast ( now Ghana ). His twin sister Efua Atta who died in 1991, shared the middle name atta which in the Akan means twin. In the Akan names tradition, some children are named according to the day of the week on which they were born, or in relation to how many children precede them. Kofi in Akans corresponds to Friday. Annan has said his surname rhymes with cannon in English. And he finally in 1958 began studying in economics at the Kumasi college of science and technology.
