News from Our School Counselor
Parents,
Sleep is a vital component to ensuring your child’s academic, emotional, and physical well-being. According to studies, Children aged six to 13 need 9-11 hours of sleep each night. Unfortunately, in today’s world with T.V. and video games so popular, this is often not the case. Please ensure your children are getting an adequate amount of sleep every night. Here are some tips:
• Teach school-aged children about healthy sleep habits.
• Continue to emphasize need for regular and consistent sleep schedule and bedtime routine.
• Make child's bedroom conducive to sleep – dark, cool and quiet.
• Keep TV and computers out of the bedroom.
• Avoid caffeine.
Have a great weekend!

PTO News
The Douglas MacArthur Elementary School PTO is excited to host our first annual Playground Fundraiser Gala on February 22, 2020 at the Cedar Lake Lighthouse Restaurant. This event is intended to raise much-needed funds for a new playground purchase and installation at Douglas MacArthur Elementary School in Cedar Lake, Indiana, which costs upward of $60,000 per section installed. Sections of the existing playground at the school are currently in deteriorating condition and in dire need of replacement. We believe that this fundraiser will put us one step closer towards creating a new safe place for the children to play, exercise and nurture the crucial physical and social development skills fostered by outdoor play.
We cordially invite you to consider joining our endeavor by purchasing tickets for this exciting event. This year’s gala is themed “The Roaring Twenties in 2020” and will feature hors d’oeuvres, dinner, dancing, dessert, a silent auction, cash bar and door prizes. Tickets are $100 per person and can be purchased online at www.macpto.com. This fun night out is just one week after Valentine’s Day – so consider saving your date night out to join us !

Vegetable of the month
Did you know there are three common types of pea pods? There are Snow Peas, Garden peas and Snap peas. Snow peas are also known as Chinese Pea Pods, since they are often used in stir-fry meals. They are flat with very small peas inside. The whole pod is edible, but “tough” strings along the edges are removed before eating. Garden Peas are also called sweet peas or English peas. Garden peas have pods that are firm and rounded, and the round peas inside need to be removed or shelled. The peas are sweet and can be eaten raw or cooked. Snap Peas are also known as sugar snap peas. They are a cross between snow and garden peas. You can eat the whole pod either raw or cooked.
Honey Glazed Pea Pods and Carrots
2 cups sliced carrots
½ pound snow peas, trimmed
3 TBS butter
½ tsp cornstarch
2 TBS honey
Bring large saucepan of salted water to a boil. Add carrots and cook until tender crisp 10-12 minutes. Add pea pods and cook until tender crisp; drain and set aside. Melt butter in the same pan and stir in cornstarch. Return carrots and peas and stir in honey. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through.
Students who purchase a lunch will get to try pea pods on Thursday February 13th!
