Red River Newsletter
November 2019
Dear Rider Students and Parents,
It is hard to believe that we have already completed the first quarter first of school; however, as we do, the Red River Student Council would like to thank everyone for all their help and enthusiasm in making these past couple months a great start to the school year! The 2019-2020 Student Council Cabinet consists of 8 wonderful students who are leaders for not just student council, but for the entire student body here at RRHS. This year our cabinet consists of the following students: Chloe Heydt-President, Gavin Dorsey-Vice President, Shalom Onyeka-Secretary, Anna Caoili-Treasurer, Shri Patel and Hayden Adair -Junior Representatives, and Cosette Clement and Maddy Sandberg - Sophomore Representatives.
The year has already been filled with a ton of events and opportunities to show how we all #UnleashTheRed! This year was kicked off once again by our Leadership Council welcoming the Freshmen on the 1st day of school. This was such a great way to kick off the year as it gives our Freshmen an energetic/positive start to the year, but it also gives our leaders an opportunity to lead! Our busiest time of the year thus far has been Homecoming Week. Each day had a theme such as the class of 2020’s specialty “Jersey Day” as well as a new one in “80’s workout day”. The students also competed in lunchroom games throughout the week for spirit points. The game were “finish the lyrics”, “musical chairs”, and we also brought back our childhood with “Crocodile Dentist”! In the annual powder puff football game, the junior girls took on the senior girls in flag football. This years seniors pitched a shut out and defeated the juniors 15-0. How did they get to 15 you ask??? Emma DeMott kicked the first ever PAT in powderpuff history and sealed the win for the seniors! We also elected Homecoming Royalty whom were treated to a limo ride and a delicious meal at Rhombus Guys. Royalty was as follows: King Tanner Bernhardson and Queen Mara Grenier, Joby Mullen, Drew Pineo, Kait Mercil, & Jordyn Paranica – Senior Attendants, Justin Wasvick and Kaitlin Knoll - Junior Attendants, Hunter McHenry and Campbell Dorsey - Sophomore Attendants, and Reis Rowekamp and Sadie Pasley - Freshman Attendants. We ended the week with an amazing pep rally, highlighted by the senior boys’ dance routine, recognizing our past season’s state champions, many talented musical performances, and a few friendly grade vs grade competitions that resulted in the seniors once again being crowned spirit champions!
Student Council has also participated in a ton of events throughout the community such as volunteering at the local Head Start, helping out at the State Special Olympic Soccer and Bocce Ball tournament, and spent time at local elementary schools reading to students. We also held a “Think Pink” event in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month where the students and staff participated in a pink out day at school. Student council sold “Think Pink” t-shirts and also raffled off a brand new pair of Apple Air Pods to help raise money to donate! It was truly an amazing week that not only was for a great cause, but it also was another opportunity for our student body to come together and show how great they can be!
All members of the student council thank you for your support and cooperation, and we send our best wishes for a successful remainder of the school year!
Sincerely,
Tyler Nelson

DECA
On October 13th and 14th around 40 students from Red River High School attended this year's first North Dakota DECA, Fall Leadership Conference. The goal of this conference is for first year members to get a taste of everything DECA has to offer from careers, college workshop sessions, leadership development, and competition! This conference is also the perfect opportunity for the new members to get to know the returning members and other DECA members from all around the state!
This year your Red River DECA group did a great job, with eight members being finalists in their role plays and six with astonishing test scores. The members that placed in the roleplay section of the competition are: Ally Muus, Justin Wasvik, Brady Lewandowski, Lilly Costello, Hayden Adair, Lacey Johnson, and Shrimayi Patel. The members that had high test scores are: Matthew Moe, Clarkson Sande, Hayden Adair, Brady Meland, Caitlin Mackenzie, and Bebas Dhungana.
While at Fall Leadership the Red River students had a Hygiene and Sock drive. Here they brought and bought items needed for the drive. The goal of the sock drive was to collect items for Open Doors 65 which is a program that distributes items in the Fargo area. All items are gifted to the homeless. This was a program set up by the North Dakota DECA officers. They challenged each school to set a goal for their chapter and try to exceed it while donating to the homeless in the Fargo area.
HOSA
October has been a busy month for HOSA students! This month at the HOSA meeting on October 16th , students created many creative Halloween cards for the residents at Valley 4000. To promote that October is mental health awareness month, students also wrote messages with positive affirmations about mental health to go along with suckers that will be passed out to Red River students on October 31st. HOSA officers have also been regularly speaking on the announcements about ways to cope with mental illnesses.
In class, HOSA students in the Medical Careers class have been learning about different mental health illnesses and treatments. Each student researched a different mental illness and taught the class about their topic. On November 1, students will be visiting Mountain Brook to expand on what they have been learning about this past month!

Renaissance Students of the Month
Congratulations to the students who were nominated by staff members this month. This
program is designed to recognize students for their excellence in classroom attitude,
involvement in school activities, and citizenship. Outstanding academic achievement is not a
requirement, but academic effort is a strong consideration. Students may be honored only one
time during their high school career.
