College and Career Happenings
March 2015
ACT Scores, Visiting Colleges, College Research Sessions for Juniors, Sophomore Presentations, Filing the FAFSA (senior families)
ACT Scores
Juniors took the ACT test at DGN on March 3rd. All juniors received a "Permission to Post" form in the mail. Additional copies can be found in the Counseling Office or the College and Career Center. This form allows DGN to add the ACT score to the students' transcript. Many colleges will accept these scores for the purpose of admission while others ask that students send their scores from ACT directly. Each time a student takes the ACT, they can choose to send their scores to 4 schools for free. If students do not take advantage of this option, they will be required to pay for each time they send the scores to an institution. Colleges will consider the students' highest scores for admission. Some colleges consider the students highest scores for each subject, therefore it can be advantageous to send all scores or post all of them to the transcript when applying.
Visiting Colleges
Spring is a great time for juniors to visit colleges. Whether you are visiting local colleges or traveling out of state, make arrangements early. Check the document library in Family Connection for tips on planning these visits.
College Research Sessions
Mrs. Manderino is offering College Research Sessions the week of March 16 and March 23. These sessions are intended to help juniors get started researching colleges. Topics included in this session are as follows:

Sophomore presentations
Sophomores participated in sessions in the College and Career Center over the last two weeks about career exploration and the importance of connecting students' interests, values, skills and personality to a possible career. Students were introduced to another tool in Family Connection called Road Trip Nation, and they utilized the results from the Career Interest Profiler to further research careers. Road Trip Nation is a video library of leaders in various career fields discussing the "road" to their career with a group of students. This tool allows students to further research possible careers by hearing about the experiences of current leaders in many career areas.
The handouts from this session can be found on the Sophomore page under "Information" and "March 3-6: Sophomore Group Guidance". The word "handouts" is linked to the document. Students were encouraged to continue using these tools from home as they consider post-high school plans.
Filing the FAFSA (This information is repeated from January's edition)
Senior families should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Families can start the application on January 1st. My colleagues at the Academy for College Admission Counseling have graciously prepared two resources that will be helpful as families are completing the FAFSA. The first is Financial Aid 2015. It is an extensive document providing tips for filing the FAFSA, financial resources on the web, financial aid terms and award letters. The second is a draft of the 2015 FAFSA form. Plan to complete the form right away for the greatest chances of receiving aid. Click here for more information on getting started. Finally, the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet may be helpful as you are organizing your information.
As a result of completing the FAFSA, families will receive award letters during late March or early April. These letters detail the financial aid package offered by each school. Students do not have to commit to attending a college until May 1. This allows time for families to review the award letters and compare the costs of attendance for each school.
