Author Spotlight- by Ella C. (4th grade)

Last month, students in 2nd and 3rd grade enjoyed watching a local author present his poetry. Brod Bagert came January 27th to talk to students about writing poetry. He shared some of his new work with the students and also shared his "secret" to writing poetry. He said the trick to good writing is to rewrite it as many times as you can! Each time you rewrite, you make it a little bit better. He rewrites his poems at least 50 times before he is finished with them!

Read Across America Week- By Cohen C. (3rd Grade)

Next month, we will participate in Read Across America week (February 29-March 4) as a way to encourage reading and honor Dr. Suess. This is a national event that falls on Dr. Suess's birthday each year. Here are some things to look forward to that week:

  • Voting booth: visit the lobby to vote for your favorite Dr. Suess book
  • School-wide Read-a-Thon on Dr. Suess's birthday (Wednesday, March 2): 20 minutes set aside where everyone in school will be reading independently, followed by a birthday party with cake in each class!
  • Guest readers will stop by classrooms to read Dr. Suess books
  • Dress-up days:
  • Monday-"Green Eggs and Ham"- wear green
  • Tuesday- "Fox in Socks"- wear crazy socks
  • Wednesday- "Wacky Wednesday" wear your clothes backwards/inside out
  • Thursday- "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish"- wear red and/or blue
  • Friday- "Cat in the Hat"- wear a crazy hat

LYRC List Voting-By Noah W. (4th Grade)

Every year, students in 3rd and 4th grade participate in choosing the winner of the Louisiana Young Readers Choice (LYRC) Award. Throughout the school year, we read most of the books on the list and vote on the one we like the best. Last week, during library, students got to participate in the vote. After tallying up the votes, Ms. Rivers said the winner at our school was Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein. She will enter our votes and tell us the state winner when it is announced in March. Click here to get a head start on reading the books for next year!
