Why is protecting personal information important?

Over the past few decades, the internet has practically taken over today's society. It hasn't not only advanced us to a brighter future, but it has also been the issue of many personal information issues. Millions of people a day sign up for website, each requiring some personal information. Everyone thinks that their information is safe. Is it really? How do you know this website is real, or this company even exist?

Why should I worry about my personal information being share?


Personal information being shared can cause some major issues. Identity thief, being made a fool of, and people could possibly get hurt. When making your profile private to where only your "friends" can see, one of them could possibly take a really embarrassing photo, piece of information, or even your address and phone number, and share them with people you probably don't know, or trust.

What the Survey says

Pew Research Center conducted a survey on personal information being stolen online.

According to the survey conducted in January, 18 percent of online adults -- up from 11 percent in July 2013 -- said they'd had personal information stolen,such as their Social Security number, credit card or bank account information. Older adults, ages 50 to 64, reported a large increase in data thefts -- 20 percent in January, up from 11 percent in 2013. Among young adults, ages 18 to 29, 15 percent said they'd had important personal information stolen, up from 7 percent in 2013.

Tips to help

1) Don't give out information online, especially on social media, you never know who can use it against you.

2) Make sure all websites that allow you to buy their product, have a green pad lock before the "https://". All websites should have this pad lock on the URL

3) Don't post embarrassing pictures. People can make you look like a complete fool, even ruin a hard earned reputation.
