Principal's Corner

Good Evening, CES Families:

I sincerely hope that this newsletter finds you and your family doing well and recovering from last week's winter weather.

We will celebrate Kindness Week this coming week. Be Kind shirts will be passed out to students early in the week. We will be wearing our Be Kind shirts on Thursday, February 25th. If your child didn't order a shirt, they are welcome to wear a red shirt on that day. Throughout the week, Mrs. Segreti will be encouraging students and staff to participate in random acts of kindness as well. February is also Black History Month and we will be honoring some historical black Americans during the week as well.

March 1st-March 5th is Read Across America Week, and on March 2nd, we will recognize Dr. Seuss's birthday which has been a school tradition. Each student will receive a bookmark from Mrs. Keller. If your child would like to wear a Dr. Seuss hat, t-shirt or socks to celebrate the day, they are welcome to do so. No costumes permitted.

As with most things this year, Open House will look a little different. As we celebrate Texas Public School Week, our campus is creating a virtual open house experience for you. Classroom teachers will share digital products via email and/or Seesaw at 6:30 pm on March 11th.

Warm regards,

Mrs. La Fara

Change in Instructional Model

As a reminder, parents are able to switch from in-person to remote learning at any point during the school year. In order to make this change, please contact the campus counselor.

For families that are wishing to change from remote to in-person learning, that may only be done at the end of a grading period. The process for changing to in-person learning requires parents to log in to Skyward Family Access and complete the changing instructional models form prior to the end of the nine-week grading period. Instructions on where to find the form and how to complete it can be found here. Below is a schedule of when the form will become available, when the form must be received by the campus, and when the change will go into effect:

To change after the third nine weeks, parents must complete the form between February 14 and February 26. Your student would begin receiving in-person instruction on March 22.

If you have any questions regarding the timing of when parents may change the instructional model selected or the associated process, please contact the campus counselor, Katie Segreti at katherine.segreti@gcisd.net

GCISD Update Information

Tuition Based Pre-K Program

There are a few more spots available in GCISD’s Tuition Based Pre-K program for the 2021-2022 school year! You can find information regarding tuition, campus availability and more on the GCISD Pre-K Website.

Students that may qualify for state-based Pre-K will be able to begin registration for the upcoming school year in April 2021.

GCISD Language Assessment Center Online Courses for Adults

In partnership with the Grapevine Community Outreach Center, the GCISD Language Assessment Center will begin offering online courses for adults. These free courses will be self-paced and will provide skills in English as a Second Language and Adult Basic Literacy, as well as GED support. The flyers can be viewed and shared here in English and Spanish.

KIOSK Mode

The Spring Interim Assessment Window is nearing. The window is

  • February 16- March 31
    • English I
    • English II
    • Grades 3-8 Math and Reading
    • Algebra I
    • Bio, Grade 5/8 Science - OPTIONAL

During the window, February 16- March 31, all district-issued student CHROMEBOOKS (grades 4-8) will be placed in KIOSK mode for test security purposes for the remainder of the school year beginning February 16, 2021. To exit KIOSK mode, students will need to hold down the CTRL-ALT-S key combination.

Attendance with Alisa

As a reminder, the following attendance changes were implemented district-wide at the beginning of the second-nine week grading period.

Face-to-Face Attendance
If a student misses five consecutive days of in-person instruction, or five days total during a three-week period, they will be moved into remote instruction for the remainder of that grading period. Students who are in a mandatory quarantine due to COVID-19 are exempt from this mandatory instructional change.

Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning

For students who are in-person learners for the nine weeks, synchronous (WebEx) learning opportunities will be available for COVID quarantine/isolation purposes only. If students are absent/not attending in person for non-COVID related issues such as other illnesses, vacations, etc., your child's teacher will provide asynchronous learning opportunities in Seesaw.

Logging into Seesaw asynchronously for non-COVID absences does not impact/negate the five day face-to-face attendance policy stated above. Should you have an extenuating circumstance, please reach out to our school counselor, katherine.segreti@gcisd.net

Thank you

Assessment Information from Mrs. Faragher

As we move into the spring semester, we begin preparing for additional state required assessments including TELPAS (Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System) and STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness). We have received guidance from the Texas Education Agency that to ensure equity for all students, a student must be present at a monitored testing session and must be supervised by a trained test administrator to participate in the Texas assessment program.

Therefore, all students who have selected remote instruction will need to be present on campus on these testing dates as applicable. Our assistant principal, Mrs. Faragher will be in contact with families when we get closer to the administration of these assessments.

Gifted & Talented Assessments and Results

Testing has been completed at CES for in person Kindergarten and 5th Grade students referred for GT Services, as well as the ASPIRE Academy. Once testing is completed for all Kindergarten and 5th Grade students districtwide, results will be mailed out, at the latest, March 12th.

GT specialists will administer any necessary GT LEAD and ASPIRE testing to in-person students who have been referred in grades 1-4 from February 8 through March 5, 2021. Parents will be notified regarding results as soon as the assessment process is completed.

Remote learners in Kindergarten and 5th Grade, who were referred for GT Services and/or the ASPIRE Academy, will be assessed the week of March 8th -12th. Although Advanced Academics will be composing the communication to remote learners, the actual email correspondence will come from Mr. Boykin, the campus GT Specialist. He will be contacting parents with the logistics of testing. Once testing is completed, results will be mailed to parents April 16th.
