Social and Ethnic Groups

Ethnic groups in the Ukraine include: Ukrainian 77.8%, Russian 17.3%, Belarusian 0.6%, Moldovan 0.5%, Crimean Tatar 0.5%, Bulgarian 0.4%, Hungarian 0.3%, Romanian 0.3%, Polish 0.3%, Jewish 0.2%, other 1.8%. For the Ukraine education you are required to do at least 11 years of school. School is paid through taxes Women in the Ukraine have equal constitutional rights as men but are paid less salary and have a disadvantage in finding a career. The total literacy rate in the Ukraine is 99.7%, this probably means that in the Ukraine they take school seriously and have lots of good schools.

Religion, Language, Country Flag

The official language in the Ukraine is Ukrainian. The most common language practiced in the Ukraine is Orthodox Christianity. The blue color on the Ukrainian flag represents the sky, mountains, and streams of Ukraine while the yellow represents the fields of wheat. The Ukrainian flag was officially adopted as the national flag in 1992.

Traditional Holidays or Festivals, Traditional Clothing, and Food

One holiday in the Ukraine that is practiced is called Orthodox Christmas which is celebrated on january 7th till the 14th. During this time period, people go from house to house singing, and wishing good health, prosperity, and so forth. Normally while celebrating people would be dressed up in folksy or carnival type costumes. This is called Kolyaduvannya and Schedruvannya. A traditional food in the Ukraine is a tasty treat called Baklava

* 1 (16 ounce) package of phyllo dough

* 1 pound chopped nuts

* 1 cup butter

* 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

* 1 cup of water

* 1 cup white sugar

* 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

* 1/2 cup honey
