YOU GO...!
How do you get over fear? How do you overcome all the reasons not to do what you are actually called to do?
In the words of of Navy Seal, Jocko Willink, on fear: You Go...!
It is going to be hard...., Jocko's answer: Good. It deters the cowards and intrigues the courageous.
"To each," Winston Churchill would say, "there comes in their lifetime a special moment when they are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a very special thing, unique to them and fitted to their talents. What a tragedy if that moment finds them unprepared or unqualified for that which could have been their finest hour."
Starting a new year off is exciting, challenging, and can be daunting at times. It takes courage and optimism to take on any new endeavor and starting a new year is no different. We have to make courage a habit. As William James wrote, "we have to make our nervous system our ally instead of our enemy."
Douglas MacArthur summed up all failures of life in two words:
"Too late."
Too late in preparing, too late in understanding, too late in taking action, too late in communication, too late in trying to spend time with one another, too late in taking the time to help, too late in saying thank you, too late to apologize, too late to say the things that need to be said, too late..
The majority of the time we are "too late" due to our own fear or lack of action. We are unprepared or unqualified for the moment as Churchill said. My challenge to each of us this year is to not miss the "tap on the shoulder," don't be "too late," rather, be prepared for the moment when the Holy Spirit prompts us to do something that we are uniquely equipped for at that particular moment. No matter how great or small. Be ready.
Do the brave thing. The right thing. The principled thing. Have Courage.
See you Wednesday!
- Dr. Keith McDaniel
