Dallas ISD Substitutes
January 2017 Newsletter
Welcome Back and Happy New Year!
On behalf of Dallas ISD, the Substitute Office would like to wish all of our hard working substitutes a very happy and prosperous new year! We hope everyone enjoyed their break and rang in the New Year with friends and family. It is crazy to think that we are just five short months away from summer break! The spring semester is often times the most hectic of the two semesters with state testing looming around the corner and students anxious for summer break. Remember to keep the success of our students in mind with every assignment you take---every minute of instruction counts!

Alternative Certification Teacher Academy of Dallas ISD
The Compass Alternative Certification Teacher Academy gives talented professionals who are college graduates a chance to become teachers who make a difference in the Dallas community. You will develop your teaching knowledge through hands-on, practice based instruction. The program is centered on effectiveness with the ability to receive a standard teacher certification in as little as one year! If this is something you are interested in, please click here to apply. The application deadline for the second wave of summer cohorts is 02/07/2017.
Student De-escalation tips from one of our very own!
We've all encountered some scenario where a student is disrupting the class and publicly reprimanding them simply doesn't work. Over the last few new hire orientations, our substitutes were able to work with South Oak Cliff High School's Assistant Principal Luis Valdespino. Mr. Valdespino taught de-escalation techniques that he uses with his students and gave our substitutes an opportunity to practice these techniques with each other. As frustrating as it can be to have a student not back down when we ask them to do something, it is never a good idea to go head to head with the student. Mr. Valdespino explained ways he combats this all-to-common scenario so no valuable teaching time is lost. We wanted to share some of these techniques with our entire substitute population so please take some time to visit the website below for many different classroom tips and tricks that were discussed during our new hire orientations.
Substitute Campus Coordinator List
Each campus has a set person or people who work with the substitute population. It may be an office manager, an assistant principal, or a financial clerk. This coordinator is in charge of handling substitute assignments, classroom placements, and most importantly time sheets. On the substitute webpage there is a link to the substitute campus coordinator for each campus. Please refer to this list anytime you have questions regarding your assignment or payment for that specific campus. It is a common misconception that the substitute office handles payroll for substitutes. Each campus (typically the office manager) is in charge of submitting time sheets to payroll for all assignments worked on their campus. If you ever believe there is a discrepancy on your paycheck, please be sure to reach out to the specific campus you took your assignments at. Below is a link to the substitute webpage where you can find the Substitute Campus Coordinator Contact List.
