Ancient Civ & World Cultures
CPS 6th grade Social Studies Resources
Global Studies for Global Citizens
We live in an interconnected, global society. It's our planet: yours, mine, and everyone else's, and what we do in our little part of the globe can have significant effects on the rest. The more we know about All of our fellow Earthlings and the societies they live in, the more likely we are to make decisions that benefit everyone, worldwide. The reason we spend so much time in 6th grade learning about ancient history is so you'll understand that you and everyone else on the planet shares a common history.
You won't have any official assignments to do for me while we are out of school, but I hope you'll find a little time each day to learn more about our shared history and the world around you. Keep an eye on Google classroom where I'll share NewsELA articles and schedule times for Kahoot, Gimkit and Quizlet challenges for anyone who is able to join.
The best way to learn about the world is to travel. We can't do that right now, but you're in luck because the second-best way is to read. Pick up a copy of National Geographic, an atlas of bizarre facts, or a current newspaper or magazine and start reading!
Movies and documentaries are a great way to see the far side of the globe, too. Have you watched all the Planet Earth documentaries yet? How about travel TV shows like Parts Unknown, cartoons like Wild Kratts, or the new Netflix reboot of Carmen Sandiego? PBS offers dozens of excellent, free documentaries online through its Independent Lens series, and Ken Burns' catalog of documentaries use primary source documents to tell some of the most important stories of our national history.
The links below will all take you to fun, online, geography and history games. Get lost in them while you learn more about the world.
Above all, take care of yourself and your family, enjoy your time at home, and wash your hands. I look forward to seeing you all back in school soon.
Sincerely,
Mr. Lucas
