E-Learning Week 2 (March 31 - April 2)
This week we will have e-learning on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This will continue for the next several weeks through May 1, 2020.
In order to help you check on your child's progress, I am creating a Google Document that I will use to keep track of their assignments. I will share that document with you. For privacy, your child will be identified by their student number (the first number they use to log in to their Chromebook and at lunch) rather than their name. Please check this document throughout the week to see if there is anything that your child needs to catch up on.
I will update the daily assignments each morning. The only exception is the required 45 minutes of iReady Math and 45 minutes of iReady Reading which will be checked and entered on Sunday. All assignments in iReady Math, iReading Reading (new), Xtra Math, and ConnectEd for the week are due by Sunday.
Please be aware, however, that you can not go back and "make up" Xtra Math on another day. It will only register one session each day. So please make sure your student completes his/her Xtra Math each day until he/she receives the "You are Done!" message. If you check the document and notice that they do miss one, they will need to make that up on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
I will do the final check and enter attendance on Monday morning. Per our instructions from Dr. Lorey, if they are missing 1 assignment they will receive an unexcused absence for that day.
Again, I will be checking all of the assignments late on Sunday evening and will record the entire previous week's attendance on Monday morning. Please check often and reach out to me as soon as possible if you have any questions or issues at all so we can work on them together. Communication is key!
Please remember that ALL assignments for each day will be detailed inside that day's module in Canvas.
Please remember :
- If there is an Assignment or Quiz in Canvas, it will most likely require your child to SUBMIT.
- ALWAYS BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR A SUBMIT BUTTON IN CANVAS.
Please refer to last week's newsletter for more detailed information and directions regarding the e-learning expectations.
I am also including below a link to a video that does a really great job explaining how to navigate within the ConnectEd platform that we are using for Reading on Canvas. In the future we will more than likely be assigning grammar and spelling worksheets on ConnectEd that can be completed online using online tools or also can be printed if you prefer. This video helps explain these online tools.

For iphone users, you can use your notes app and create a new note, take multiple pictures, scan them as a pdf, and email or text them to me.
Directions
Open Notes
Click camera icon at bottom
Click Scan Document
Line it up with guides and click to take a picture
You can then crop if needed
Click keep scan
If you need to scan multiple pages into one file, you can keep scanning and clicking keep.
Once finished, click save in bottom right corner.
Then click the send button the square with the up arrow in top corner.
From there, you can choose to email or text the scans.
It comes through as a pdf.
This is helpful because it won't require you to send four individual pictures, only one pdf with all pictures included. I don't know if there is a compatible feature on Android phones but it may work as well on an iPad.
There is also a way to take a picture with the Chromebook and upload it to their Canvas. I just received a video that walks them through the procedure step by step. I will post that on Canvas as well if you would like to try that with your child. It might be good to have you do it with them at first. I am open to whatever works best for all of you. If you have any better ideas also, please feel free to share with me. I am not very tech savvy and I'll admit this is testing my limits and creativity some days! :) Thank goodness for my team members.
However, if it's easier and you prefer you can simply take pictures and text, or email me them to me from your camera roll as well.
For now if you are unsure or unable to take pics, just keep the completed pages in the green folder and let me know. I would really like to see them though if at all possible.
I hope this all makes sense. Again, that you for your patience!
ZOOM WITH MRS. SERMERSHEIM- THURSDAY, APRIL 2ND AT 7:30P.M.
I WAS VERY EXCITED TO ZOOM WITH SOME OF THE KIDDOS ON MONDAY EVENING. I WILL SEND OUT AN INVITATION AGAIN AND WE CAN DO IT AGAIN ON THURSDAY EVENING.
This is NOT required, but I really would love to see as many participate as can. I think it will be great for all of us to see each other and chat a little about what we are doing!
It is super easy to set up. In Canvas under announcements you will see a Zoom page and directions on how to connect. I will share the invitation and link that the kiddos will simply need to click on to get started and join our meeting at 7:30 p.m.. There may be one more box they need to click to connect, so if possible an adult should be on hand in order to help them to connect the first time.
My goal is to give everyone who joins and wants to, a chance to talk and then hopefully I will read them a bedtime story!
So feel free to have them join in their p.j.s with their favorite stuffed animal or pet and we will have a fun getting all caught up and enjoy a story together! :) Should be lots of fun!
Accelerated Reader/AR
- Your child gets to AR through Clever
- Your child can take a test on any book from your home library, if they listen to a book online, or the story from his/her reader.
- You can type in the title of any book into AR to see if there is a quiz. There are thousands of titles on AR, so my best advice is to try anything your child has read or listened to.
- Some AR tests will read the questions to your child. It is indicated with a headphone and your child just needs to turn it on. I ask that if the test reads to your child, please let them do it on his/her own.
- If this is not an option, you can read the questions and choices to your child. However, please let your child answer the questions independently. If he/she chooses the wrong answer please don't correct them. This is really hard, I know, but I would like a true picture of their comprehension.
- Mrs. Bauer is allowing this to remain open as long as we feel it is being done with integrity.
