ADMINISTRATION UPDATE
Dear CCS Friends and Families,
We wish that we could frame our newsletter around topics other than COVID-19 (we’re guessing that is your wish also), but that feels most pertinent right now. As always, with any community concern, we are so thankful to partner with all of you as we navigate such a fluid and uncertain situation. The beauty of working with children in a school is that we get to put their needs first and they keep us focused on the things that are most important - safety, health, good relationships and finding opportunities for joy, empathy and learning!
Jen attended a workshop this morning, Beyond Diversity: Courageous Conversations Leadership for Racial Equity. One relevant takeaway that aligns with our current state; “ Adaptive challenges require us to take time and space to collaboratively respond.” We want to assure you that this is the timely response we’re enacting as the COVID-19 health concern unfolds in our region. The time and space aspect is condensed, as we engaged in collaborative problem-solving with our colleagues in other CVSD, Chittenden county schools, and the broader VT education community. Please continue to look for updates from CVSD and CCS.
At this point, we are taking direction from the VT Agency of Education and the Department of Health. Additionally, Governor Scott will be providing an update today at 5:30 p.m. Check local news sources for this event.
We are minimizing large gatherings and canceling or postponing non-essential events. Limiting events to essential schooling supports our ability to have time for the enhanced, deep cleaning routines that our facilities staff are doing nightly. ALL CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES WILL BE CANCELED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
Here are some things that you and your children that are also helpful right now:
- Wash your hands.
- Stay at home if you are sick.
- Limit physical contact with other people.
- Communicate if you have an idea or have a question or feel nervous.
- Seek facts and avoid spreading rumors.
- Help school staff by cleaning up after yourself.
- Support your peers and friends. Everyone's a little on edge right now - unnecessary jokes and comments aren’t helpful.
- Prepare students for handling disappointment - many events are being canceled, which can be hard for students. Framing this by acknowledging disappointment and considering the “size of the problem” is helpful. Most children can also benefit from being coached in how to interact with others when they’re disappointed.
As our CCS precept says “we take care of ourselves, others and our community” Our thoughts are with the community members who may not have access to necessary supplies. Our goal is to have a Food Drive for the Charlotte Food Shelf next week. They have a significant need for cleaning supplies such as Dawn dish soap, bleach, Pine-Sol, Simple Green, hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes, 70% or more alcohol, Aloe Vera, glycerin. They also need Kid-friendly food foods: Cheerios or other cereal, granola bars, chicken noodle soup, crackers, juice boxes. If you are able to donate, please send things into CCS or make a drop directly at the Food Shelf.
CVSD will continue to collaborate and share updates in a timely manner.
Kind Regards,
Stephanie, Jen and Cassandra
