November's News from the SVHS Counseling Office
Welcome
New Process
We noticed that the SVHS Weekly Announcements and the SVHS Counseling Newsletters were duplicating a lot of information. Therefore, to simplify things and not overwhelm you with too many things to read, we decided to streamline the counseling newsletter into the announcements.

What's happening in the Counseling Office
We continue to be busy assisting students with a variety of things. Social/Emotional issues, College Preparation, Career Exploration, Schedule Changes, and many other things are being addressed. In order to meet the variety of needs of students, we continue to meet in both small groups and on an individual basis daily.
We have had many college representatives come to the school and speak to seniors about different colleges and programs offered. We have also had military representatives and skills trade employees meet with students who may be interested.
We have also formed a "Peer Mediation" lunch program involving seniors who are having lunch with and mentoring some of our freshman students. The seniors will be doing this throughout the year and will be addressing topics that pertain to "success in high school". It also provided familiar friendly faces for our younger students to connect with both in and out of the classroom. This is the first time we have had this program and we're excited to have it up and rolling.
Soup For Sweats
Friday, December 16th is our next "Soup For Sweats". However, we will be asking students to bring "Anything but Soup" for sweats. We still have plenty of soup but we are in need of other nonperishable foods for our food pantry. We will be providing families with extra groceries to help out during the holiday break to assist with meals and snacks while students are at home.
Items Needed:
- Cereal
- Cereal Bars
- Poptarts
- Granola Bars
- Fruit and Grain Bars
- Snacks of any type (Bundles of individual packages or Large Bags or Packages)
- Juice boxes
- Capri Sun drink pouches
- Cookies
- Crackers (plain, with cheese, with peanut butter)
- Pasta and Sauces
- Mac n Cheese
- Boxed Potatoes of any variety
- Cans of Corn or Green Beans
- Jerkey/Meat Sticks
- Ramen Noodles
SMART CARDS
The counseling office is selling "Smart Card" coupon books. These books have great deals on local dining, golf, fast food, and other entertainment in the area. Please call or stop in the high school office if you would like to purchase a Smart Card. The cost is $25 and all proceeds go to helping students and families in need throughout the school year.
Holiday Assistance and The "Amazing Race"
Each holiday season, Swan Valley High School has adopted 20-30 families in our community to help make their holiday season special. We would like to continue this tradition this year by helping even more members of our Swan Valley Family and Community! Therefore, SVHS will once again be holding their annual BIG event that will help raise money for this GREAT cause and will consist of a competition between all grades.
On Friday, December 2nd at 9:00 a.m., Swan Valley High School will be hosting it’s 8th Annual Amazing Race! During this race, students will be able to make a donation to help support our SVHS “Adopt a Family” program. The race is a competition between all grade levels and the winning grade will receive a special holiday meal (all arrangements TBD).
Students nominated by their teachers (based on citizenship, school spirit, and displaying kindness to others) will team up and will run from classroom to classroom to help collect money from their grade. The runners will take the money to the office to deposit it. The race will only last about 15 minutes and it is the only time you will be able to donate! However, you can raise and collect money in advance by doing can/bottle drives, putting donation envelopes/boxes/cans out at your parents work location, or asking family, neighbors, and friends to donate. You will not be able to turn the money in until the actual day of the race. However, that money will count towards your grade for the competition. Both cash and checks (made out to SVHS) are acceptable! The past several races have raised up to $5,000. This year we are helping more families than years past so lets make this a success!!!
Once again….we are looking for Corporate Sponsors as well. If you choose to be a corporate sponsor, YOU CAN NOT count it as a donation for each grade competing. We want to keep corporate sponsors separate from the grade level competitions this year. However, Corporate Sponsors will be posted and advertised in return for their donations. Signs will be made and we will share their names with any form of media coverage we receive for the event.
PLEASE begin raising money now for this event. We want to be able to help as many families as possible this year.
