PILGRIM GR 2 ELA and MATH
Update: Nov 13, 2015
ELA NEWS:
This week we read some motivational stories and used words like "encourage' and "inspire". We played with "ay" and "ai" rhymes, found some meaningful quotes on the internet, and wrote some great poems. We finished The Witches, and have begun to look at fables and folk tales.
Next week, we'll continue with fables and look at those weird "igh" vowel sounds a bit more closely.

MATH UPDATE: UNIT 3
The TRUDLE STORE opened!
On Monday, each 2nd grade math student took their Trudle Bucks earned during this first quarter and went shopping in the Trudle* Store.
Trudle* is the nonsense word (created by Miss H) to help foster independent learning and practice. Many opportunities are available for students to further their skills and as they do extra practice they earn those points which then transfer to BuCKS!
Learning practice choices include: math boxes in our journals, games to play, extra challenge paperwork and activities, and iPad math games. Now we are adding IXL!
Meet our Trudle Storekeepers!
Here are our terrific volunteers! It's Valerie Carlson, school parent of an upper grader, and Anna Lambros, parent of Lily (2nd grader). They help get all the supplies out and organized and then facilitate the shopping experience. Without these volunteers, this store couldn't exist!
A big thank you to them both!
Our newest GAME for Fridays...SWISH
It's a unique card game to help build visual discrimination!
Using "transparent" cards, players see and match the many colored "dots" and "donuts" by turning, flipping, and matching. It's a VISuAL processing challenge!
So what's this IXL?
This week your child came home with a username and password to sign into IXL. This site provides a step by step skill building program for ELA and MATH. It provides practice individualized for your child and offers yet another way for learning. The BEST part of this is that you can get a FREE download for an app on your tablet! Set up a schedule for your child to use this as part of a routine at home (and school will be doing the same!)
Shopping Trip on MONDAY, Nov 16!
Monday's math class will offer a special opportunity to use our "math skills", menu planning, and collaboration through a service project at JEWEL. Each group will have $25 to spend for our HOLIDAY MEAL BAG project sponsored by Pilgrim Kids Care. Let's see how many MEAL BAGS we can share with the Lincoln Square Friendship Center!
