PBIS
Our PBIS Team are planning some positive ways we can end the school year with our students, including a celebration for the last day of school, and a final push for Spartan Tickets. They are hoping to restock the Spartan Ticket store. If you're able to help, an Amazon Wish List has been created here. Any donations are appreciated to help promote positive behavior at Superior Middle School.
Poppy Poster Contest
In honor of Memorial Day coming up the Superior American Legion sponsored a Poppy Poster Contest. The poppy has become an internationally recognized symbol of the lives sacrificed in war and the hope that none died in vain. Memorial Day is observed every May to recognize the lives that have been sacrificed during American Wars. Posters featuring the poppy made by Superior Middle School students can be found throughout Superior.
Our own Superior Middle School held a contest. Voting was completed by SMS Veterans. Congratulations to the school winners.

Counselors Corner
In observance of Mental Health Awareness Month we continue to talk about Mental Wellness during Advisory. May 15-16 we focused on Digital Media and Your Brain. Students read this article (Teen Depression Explodes Along With Smart Phone Use) and discussed it in class. Please spend a minute reading it. Here are some highlights:
- Major depression diagnoses among teens have risen more than 50 percent in the last decade.
- Excessive smart phone use triggers another behavior that plays into depression: sleep deprivation, which has been linked to mood disorders, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts.
- Research shows these changes in teenage behavior and emotional states happened rather abruptly around 2012, which coincides with the year when teens with smartphones increased to more than 50 percent for the first time. Meanwhile, rates of teen depression and suicide have exploded since 2011. And now, research shows three out of four teens owned a smartphone by 2017. (That number is around 95% now).
Teens need CAREGIVERS to set rules and boundaries around cell phone and social media use. Wait Until 8th is an incredible resource to help adults empower kids to hold off on social media until 14 years old. Our kids are worth the wait!
Counselors are here to support all our students. Please reach out to:
Amy Warring - 6th Grade
Claire Illies - 7th Grade
Maryann Bonneville - 8th Grade
5th-6th Transition Night
