Lesson 8.2 - Dividing Fractions Word Problems
Common Core Standard
Which Number Goes First in the Division Problem???? It Matters!!!!!!!!!
The first number is ALWAYS what you have/start with. Key words will help you with that.
Example:
Drew has 5 coconuts. He cuts each coconut into 1/4 size pieces. How many pieces of coconut does Drew have?
5 / 1/4 -
5 would goes first because it is what Drew had. It is what is being cut.
Example:
Eight students share 5 pizzas equally. What fraction of a pizza will each friend get?
5 / 8 -
5 would go first because the pizza is what is being shared or cut. Also, notice the question asks WHAT FRACTION.
That is telling you your answer should be a fraction. If you get a WHOLE NUMBER you DID NOT set the problem up correctly.

STATION DAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dividing Fractions Small Group Review
The students will begin class with everyone in Station 1
Station 1: Rule reminders for today’s stations: (10 mins)
All stations are 15 minutes. I will tell you when to switch.
Work the entire time you are at the station.
If you do not finish in that amount of time please do not worry. If you worked the entire time there will be enough evidence for me to look over.
Keep talking to a WHISPER.
DO NOT bother the teacher while she is at a station.
After learning the rules for today’s Small Group Review students will move to their stations.
Station 2: Finish creating “Rules for Dividing Fractions and Whole Numbers” poster. (10 mins)
This will ensure students are writing and reading the rules.
Station 3: Teacher Small Group - students will work practice problems with the teacher. They will each take a turn explaining to the teacher how to work division problems. (10 mins)
Station 4: Partner Talk (10 min) - students will take turns working a problem and then explain step by step to their partner the steps they took to find the answer to the problem. (tomorrow they will ALL be given a problem via email and will respond to the teacher with their answer and detailed explanation of how they answered it.)
Station 5: IXL Assignment (10 min)- students will work IXL division problems on their chromebooks until time is up. The number the students complete will be based on their understanding of the material and teacher discretion on if they worked to their potential.
Station 6: Students will work to create a Dividing Fractions Word Problem on their own. They will then share it with someone in their group via Google Docs for them to solve and share back with the owner.
Station 7: Finish Math Matters assignment if not completed from last week.
Station 8: Everyone comes back together before class ends. We will discuss whole group any questions students have after completing the stations.
Any paper assignments from today’s stations will be taken up.
