Viking News - The Week of 1/9/2023

Happy Friday, RHS Students!
It was great to welcome everyone back this past week as we kicked off 2023 strong! 💪 We have a lot going on as we wrap up the first semester over the coming weeks. Students and teachers are gearing up for mid-term exams to take place the week of January 17th. Please be sure to check the exam schedule in advance and work with Ms. Luster and your teachers if there are any legitimate reasons to have to reschedule. Please remember, that your prompt attendance is a vital part of the experience and students should make every effort to be in exams, and on time. With that being said, things happen and communication is key. If you have any questions, please email in advance.
This past week, current RHS students met with the 8th graders to talk about the transition to HS. It was a bittersweet experience as I met the new and upcoming freshmen class; while thinking and reminiscing that this means we will send another senior class off into the world in just a few short months. Enjoy every moment and take the opportunities to utilize the many resources we have available to you here as you prepare for your next adventure!
RHS Athletics continues on with a successful season so far for our winter sports teams. This past Tuesday, the RHS musicians graced us with the first RHS Pep Band who performed throughout Tuesday's Varsity Boys' basketball game. It was great to see the excitement of the fans and talent of our musicians and athletes combined in the same space! 🎹🥁🎷🏀
Here's to a great week ahead 😎

ALICE Review
Just as we have fire drills and bus evacuation drills to ensure the safety of the staff and students in the event of emergency situations, we also ensure that the students are aware of all of our safety and emergency preparedness measures. At assemblies this week, Rockport Police Chief John Horvath will be providing, for our students and staff, an overview of the A.L.I.C.E. response protocols in place in our schools. A.L.I.C.E. is the acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. A practice drill will take place in our schools over the coming months. We will be communicating more information to you when the more formal drill is scheduled to take place.
RHS Mid-Term Exam Information - January 17th-January 20th, 2023
Please click the link below for a copy of the detailed exam schedule. Note that it is important for students and families to plan accordingly for the shortened exam days. Students are only expected to come in for their scheduled exams and are free to leave after they complete their obligations. Buses run per usual to accommodate the middle school schedule. If your high school student wishes to take the normally scheduled bus, he or she may use the library to read or to prepare for upcoming exams.
*In the event of an official district snow day, the exam schedule will be pushed forward; meaning, the exams scheduled for that day/s will take place the day we return to school and any remaining exams will take place on subsequent days.

Hockey 🏒- This week the Vikings went 1-1 at home with a 3-1 loss to Northeast and a 3-1 win against Pentucket. The loss against Northeast was a tough one, but we bounced back on Wednesday night with a strong outing. In those two games we got goals from Mark Pollock, Dougie Pratt, Michael Murphy, and Quinn Brady totaling four different goal scorers which contributes to our depth. Nick Nocella had a strong outing against Pentucket, while Michael Nocella played strongly in both games.
Girls' Basketball 🏀- Girls Basketball has managed to win 4 out of 7 games. Four different ladies have managed to score in double figures at least once this year. They are Ava MacDowell, Allie George, Adrianna Loguidice, and Gabby Lucido. In addition, Anita Magee and Franky Twombly have rebounded well and played solid defense. Talia Osier is always a threat from beyond the three point arc. Addie Gardner and Ella Silver have played well in reserve.
Boys' Basketball 🏀- The Rockport Vikings are off to a great start to the 2022-2023 season. Fighting through injuries and illness they are off to a 3-4 start in their first 7 games including a great come-from-behind victory in the Holiday Tournament Championship game. The team scoring leaders so far this season are Josiah Whitley averaging 16.4 points a game and Ed Merz averaging 13.1 points a game. Patrick Reardon has been fantastic on the glass for the team averaging 5 rebounds a game. The team is a young squad looking to grow and continue to compete every game in the Cape Ann League this season.
