Teachers, Throw Away the Old Playbook

"Do not confine your children to your own learning, for they were born in another time."-Chinese Proverb

I really love this quote above because it sums up that are world is changing. Teachers have to stay knowledgable with these new changes because this new generation of students are being raised around technology. The more resources a teacher can learn about and use only will benefit the students in a positive way. Before starting this class I had no idea that there were so many technology resources from teacher blogs, teacher channel, TED talks, info graphics, voicethread, and even pinterest has limitless amount of education ideas! Teachers need to start adapting to all these new changes because without them, students will suffer.

The world is changing and teachers should be to.

"If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow."- John Dewey

21st Century Education
This YouTube video above really made me realize how much students today base their lives off of technology and how differently they are learning. This is another great reason why teachers need to face these changes and throw away the old playbook!

"Teacher Survival Guide: Tips For New Teachers To Use Technology In The Classroom"

I went to the TeachingChannel for advice about technology in the classroom and that "survival guide" for new teachers who aren't that familiar with technology use. This video gives really helpful tips for teachers and ways to integrate technology in the classroom. The main idea in this video is about utilizing that teacher online community. There are so many resources on the web for teachers and constant brainstorming of new ideas for students! For example, The TeachingChannel is a perfect example of that online teacher community! This is something every teacher needs to be aware of because it is more then beneficial! Another great tip they pointed out on this video was "Test new technologies before using them in the classroom." This is very important because as a teacher you only have so much focus from the students and if you aren't well prepared with the lesson that involves technology you will lose those students instantly. They also talk about having that "back up plan." Technology doesn't always come through the way you might want it to, it is very crucial to have a plan B so if something goes wrong you have something to fall on!

Using Technology In The Classroom- GoAnimate Video!

I used goanimate.com to make my movie, if you click on the hyperlink it will direct you to the movie clip! I found a website from another classmate that you can create your own videos. These videos are easy to make and fun! It was an interesting way to provide information, rather than showing a powerpoint or lecturing. The video didn’t take more than 20 minutes, and I feel as if students could use this and get creative with their own projects!

"Teachers need to integrate technology seamlessly into the curriculum instead of viewing it as an add-on, an afterthought, or an event."-Heidi-Hayes Jacobs, Educational Consultant

Why Integrate Technology into the Curriculum?

A lot of teachers may ask, why should they integrate technology into the curriculum? I read an article from Edutopia that was about reasons why integrating technology in the curriculum is so important. "Technology is ubiquitous, touching almost every part of our lives, our communities, our homes. Yet most schools lag far behind when it comes to integrating technology into classroom learning." This was the first sentence of the article and also a really scary thought. If technology is such a huge part of our lives today, then why haven't schools adapted to it yet? Effective tech integration doesn't mean just explaining different software programs and teaching basic computer skills. It means enhancing and deepening students learning throughout the curriculum through the use of technology. Yet, another benefit that technology tools have is that students are more likely to focus and stay engaged and on task during lessons and this then reduces behavioral issues in the class. Another reason the article gave about using technology in the classroom was that it enhances the relationship between the student and the teacher. When teacher integrate technology tools effectively through subjects, students start to look up to you and put you in a greater role then just their teacher. This article was really helpful to anyone who doesn't think technology should be used in the classroom. When it is used, it helps teaching and learning more significantly important and fun!

Final Thoughts!!

Throughout this class we have learned many different ways to incorporate technology in the classroom. All of these tools will help us engage our students as well as providing them with new ways of learning material. It is extremely important to use technology in the classroom, and it’s important for teachers young and older to become more familiar with it. It is amazing to think how far we have come with technology, and to think what is to come next in the future. I know for sure that I will utilize all of the tools we have gained from this class to enhance my own classroom!
