Matanzas High School Weekly Update

9th and 10th Grade F.A.S.T Testing - Wednesday May 3rd
On Wednesday May 3rd all 9th and 10th grade students will take the F.A.S.T ELA Reading, Progress Monitoring 3 assessment. This assessment is a graduation requirement for 10th grade students. The results of this assessment for both 9th and 10th grade students will be used to make placement decisions for English Language Arts and Intensive Reading courses for the 2023-2024 school year.
Please ensure your child gets a good night of sleep the night before, eats a healthy breakfast and arrives at school on time on Wednesday. Student testing locations are posted in Schoology, students in 9th and 10th grade will report directly to their testing locations at 8:10AM on Wednesday. All 11th and 12th grade students will follow their regular schedule as all other courses will be held as usual.
The assessment lasts 120 minutes (two hours) and students may continue working at the end of that time to complete the test, up to the end of the school day if needed. For more information about the F.A.S.T assessment, visit https://flfast.org/fast.html
May 5 Checkout Procedures
Students who submitted pre-approval forms to check out early on May 5 must attend all classes through the end of 4th period.
Students must sign out in the breezeway prior to leaving campus. Students will be given a pass to exit campus. Students may not transport additional students off campus.
Regular check out procedures will apply for all other students. Any student who needs to be checked out early on Friday must have previously submitted either a written note or email or a person listed on the student's emergency contact list must report to the attendance office to sign the student out.

Monday 5/1 PM - Environmental Management

Check in for morning exams is 8AM, afternoon exam check in is 12:05PM. All exams will be in Building 10 (downstairs). If you have an afternoon test, go to first lunch and then check in for testing immediately after first lunch. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late for any test you will not be admitted!
Students must bring a photo ID and blue or black pens to testing (no pencils). Students may not bring backpacks, cell phones, purses or other items into the testing location. Find a secure location for those items prior to arriving for test check in. Water or snacks may only be brought in to the testing room in a clear package without labels.
Prom Information
- MHS Prom 2023 is SOLD OUT
- Prom will be May 5th, 2023 from 7PM - 11PM at the Hard Rock Hotel in Daytona Beach. Be sure to bring $10 for parking at the Hard Rock Hotel.
- Students and guests are required to show photo ID (school ID, driver's licence, etc) to be admitted. No students or guests will be admitted without photo ID.
- All students and guests attending prom must enter the event prior to 9PM. No students or guests will be admitted after 9PM. There is no re-entry to the event, once a student or guest exits the prom area they will not be readmitted.

Parents! Please mark your calendars for the following upcoming dates for state testing. Tests indicated with a * below are a graduation requirement. Any changes to the bell schedule will be communicated prior to the day. Students not participating in testing will follow their regular class schedule.
May 3: All 9th and 10th Grade Students - F.A.S.T Reading PM3*
May 9: Geometry and Algebra 1 EOC*
May 11: Biology EOC, U.S. History EOC and Florida Civics Literacy Exam
May 12: CDFs (District Final Exams) for Periods 1, 2 and 3
May 15: CDFs for Periods 4 and 5
May 16: CDFs for Period 6 and 7
Spotlight - Guest Speaker Colin Johnson
This week, students from FPC joined students from MHS to hear from a special guest speaker. Mr. Colin Johnson is the grandson of Maya Angelou, and he spoke with our students about the life and legacy of his grandmother, a famed American poet and civil rights advocate.
Tutoring Schedule
Let's finish the 4th quarter strong! Free tutoring with bus transportation is offered every Tuesday and Thursday after school from 2:45-4:20 for ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, Edgenuity (Grad 100), and test re-takes and make up. See updated schedule with room locations below!
Senior Class Information
Senior Graduation Speakers Wanted - NEW DEADLINE
Each year, the administration selects graduating seniors to make speeches at graduation. To be considered, seniors should draft a 500-1000 word speech and submit a printed copy to Ms. Drumm in the front office by 3PM on May 5, 2023.
Selected speakers will participate in practice sessions at MHS between May 19 and May 25 and must be available May 26th at 1PM to travel to the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach for speech rehearsal. If you have any questions about the graduation speech requirements, contact Coach Roe in 9-202.
