ORCHARD DRIVE ELEMENTARY
WE TAKE PRIDE IN OUR TRIBE
WILSON'S WORDS
Dear Orchard Drive families,
Happy Fall to everyone! The year is well underway with great learning, exciting events, and most importantly-happy children!
The Jackson R-2 School District is currently utilizing a program called i-ReadyⓇ Diagnostic that helps teachers effectively assess students in Reading and Math. The results allow us to provide individualized instruction based on each student’s unique needs. Your child’s teacher(s) have shared these results with you. If you have any questions about these results, please contact your child's teacher.
One way we use these results is through individualized instruction time throughout our day known as WIN ( What I Need) Time for reading instruction and PowWow (Response to Intervention). This is a time that your child will receive instruction based on their individual strengths and weaknesses. If you have questions about what your child is working on during this time please feel free to contact us!
Parent Teacher Conference time is just around the corner...Thursday, October 11 and Tuesday, October 16. Please make sure you schedule a time to see your child's teacher(s). Then just a reminder that there is NO SCHOOL on Friday, October 19 due to the teachers working the conference nights. Our PTO will have Book Fair set up starting Wednesday, October 10-17...and they WILL be open on conference nights.
ACADEMIC DISTINCTION
This year at Orchard Drive Elementary, 3rd and 4th graders have the opportunity to earn Academic Distinction for semester 1 and semester 2. To attain this status, a student must have a 3.5 average on their report card. We will then have the list of students' names published in the newspaper at the end of each semester.
SIMMONS' SCOOP
Can you believe that we are already half way through the 1st quarter of school? We are off to
a great start at Orchard Drive Elementary! Good school attendance is a very important factor
for success in school. Please make sure that your child is here on time, and if possible make
any doctor appointments for after school. Students are dismissed to go in their classrooms at 7:50. Please try to get your child to school by 7:50. If you arrive at 8:00 or after you will need to sign your child in at the office. Our teachers are trying very hard to make the most
of every minute of the school day. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me

After Reading With Your Child
Continue the experience by asking:
- How did the story make you feel?
- What did you like or dislike about the story?
- Does the story remind you of any other story?
- What were you wondering as you read?
- Does this book make you think of anything else you've read?
- What was your favorite part?
- Were there any parts that surprised you?
- What are you going to read next?
COUNSELOR CORNER
In our September counseling classes, we have been learning about school
responsibilities. We have discussed topics such as listening, following classroom
rules, study skills, and goal setting. Ask your child the four listening rules:
Eyes watching, ears listening, voice quiet, and body still.
In October, we will focus on disABILITY awareness topics and making good, safe choices. During the week of October 15-18, students at Orchard will participate in a disABILITY Awareness activities during their specials class time! Please take some time to ask your child what they learned during the week.
Over the next few months, our students will participate in bully prevention lessons. In kindergarten/first grade, we will learn the difference between tattling/reporting, and techniques to resolve conflicts with others. In second/third/fourth grades, we will learn techniques to resolve conflicts with others, how to recognize bullying, and the differences between a bystander and an upstander.
A great resource for information regarding bullying/bullying prevention is stopbullying.gov. On the website, there is a list of ways for parents to help prevent bullying. Also, just a reminder…there is an anonymous bullying reporting form on the Jackson R-2 website at www.jacksonr2schools.com/district/anti-bullying/
At Orchard, the safety of our students is a top priority!
Pursuant to Missouri Senate Bill 638, Section 161.1050, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has established the “Trauma-Informed Schools Initiative.” Please follow this link, https://dese.mo.gov/traumainformed to locate resources about Trauma Informed Schools and the Missouri Model for the State Trauma Initiative. The implementation of a trauma-informed approach is an ongoing process; it is a profound paradigm shift in knowledge, perspective, attitudes and skills that continues to deepen and unfold over time. If you have any questions regarding what our district is doing as part of being trauma informed, please contact your school counselor, Jill Hadler, at 243-9555 or jhadler@jr2mail.org.

THE PRIDE OF OUR TRIBE
WORK HARD DO YOUR BEST SHOW YOUR ORCHARD PRIDE!
Each Week a staff member picks another staff member to receive the Orchard Pride banner. It is given to the staff member whom they think shows PRIDE here at school every day. The banner hangs outside their classroom door or area for the entire week and a new staff member is announced during the Monday morning announcements.
