NWEA Mid-Year Tests
WHAT: NWEA (Northwest Education Association) MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) is a system of benchmark assessments designed to help teachers track student progress in the basics of Reading, Math, and Language Usage (grammar). The tests are online (iPads) and are computer-adapted. This means that your next question is based on how you did on the previous question.
WHO: All SMS students take exams in Reading, Math, and Language Usage. Students will find out their testing centers today.
WHY: Unlike ILEARN which tests how well students know the subject at their grade level, NWEA tests basic skills without regard to grade level. NWEA questions go down to lower elementary level and go up to high school level. This info is very helpful for teachers to find out exactly where you are and what you need!
WHEN: We will take the test over three days. Tomorrow (Tuesday) we will take the Reading test. Thursday (Jan. 16) is Math day. Monday (Jan. 20) is Language Usage day.
WHAT ELSE:
- The test is untimed. Our initial test session is 90 minutes. Students not done in 90 minutes will have an extra hour in the afternoon. If you need more than that, we'll finish next day.
- The test is only valuable if you give your best effort. Teachers will be making instructional decisions and homeroom remediation decisions based on your performance. Do your best!
- The SLOTH is watching. Don't rush. If you are rapidly marking answers without a reasonable time to read the questions, the sloth character will appear and stop your test. Your teacher will talk to you and restart the test after any sloth appearance.
- When you finish, you may either read a print book OR you may draw silently. Once the test is done, we will not go back on iPads until the session is done.
- Students can earn up to four Warrior points for NWEA testing. A HERO point will be awarded for each test without a sloth and also one point (total) for attending all three test sessions.
Good luck on your exams. Bring your iPad and your mind fully charged. Do your best!
